... and eighth Mac, including a MacBook Pro. Not that any of them ever failed, just upgrading. This current one is nearly 3 years old, ancient by computer standards.

Should be here in a few days, since it was custom-configured and wasn't available at the local Apple Store per Apple policy, had to do it online with FedEx delivery.

Has a couple of Terabytes of storage, plus a separate 256 Gig solid state drive just for the apps. A quad-core processor, 16 Gig memory, 27" screen, wireless KB, mouse & trackpad, and will use the harmon/kardon tower speakers & subwoofer I already have with this iMac, since I didn't see anything currently available that was significantly better than these, nor would esthetically match nicer.

Not sure what I'll do with this old iMac, perhaps donate it to charity. I'll report back how the new one works when it arrives in a few days.

Post online here with it? It's just a new toy for me, seemed nice. I suppose now I can have a bigger screen, and keep a bunch more things going at the same time.

If I can afford it, why shouldn't I indulge myself? Anything that pleases me is worth having.

Unless you're planning on rendering your own 3D animated feature film 16gb of [you didn't say but I'll assume RAM] is serious overkill.

Congratulations for pissing your money away on bullshit and being unhumble enough to gloat. You're disgusting. A toy? You're a fool too.icon_rolleyes.gif

I hope at least since you can afford this crap you're also donating to charities or helping your community in other ways.

I likely give away more to gay charities than you even earn. Not to mention what my partner does, And we raise much more through other donors. Your jealousy just drips. Work hard like us, and maybe someday you can do the same, and be of some value to others, not just someone who bitches & moans but does nothing.

I know most of us don't have $4000 to spend on a web surfing machine, but if you had money to burn, you'd treat yourself to something nice too. icon_wink.gif

Yeah, what's wrong with stimulating the economy? We need more money spent in consumption.

Congrats! I have a barely workable frankenstein PC from the mid nineties.

Somehow, I make due. One day... one day though...

Oh, that's was trucked up to my partner's sister's house in Boca Raton, a week before our Boston trip earlier this month. She can store it better than we can, and we were concerned in case a hurricane hit while we were away. We also dragged all our planters and patio furniture inside for the same reason.

Not sure what I'll do with the Vespa. I'm really not supposed to be riding it because of my epilepsy. But I just like keeping it around for sentimental reasons, that go back to the mid-1960s. And I like to think I may yet ride it again some day.

OK, Day 3 with the new iMac 27" and it's great. But some notes in case anyone else gets an upgrade from an old iMac to a new.

Apple has a Utility called Migration Assistant, that you use to transfer all your data from the previous computer to the current one. Some warnings:

You MUST use a Firewire cable. Anything else will take the better part of a week, if you have upwards of 200 Gig to move, as I did. With Firewire 800 it takes around an hour, at least with a Quad Core Processor.

Fortunately my old iMac had both 800 and 400 Firewire ports, but I learned that not all Firewire (IEEE 1394) is the same. There are different wire counts. The local Apple store guys confirmed which ports I had (800 to 800) so that I bought the correct cable.

A big problem, though, that Apple Care on the phone said was brand new to them: after I moved all my old files over using Migration Assistant, iTunes wouldn't recognize my iPhone 4. Turns out the problem was I needed to first do an online software upgrade for the new computer, which took hours & hours, nearly a gig of data.

But after the upgrade, iTunes and my iPhone 4 were talking again. Lesson: if you buy a new Apple computer, you gotta complete all the online upgrades first, or you're gonna have weird problems.

So now I've got this huge 27-inch screen, running blazingly fast, because most of the files are on a solid-state drive, instead of on a hard drive. And I just love having a nearby Apple store, because I simply go there and they solve all my problems, and have everything I need. Sure beats going to an ordinary retail store, where the clerks haven't got a clue about anything.

There's nothing wrong with spending money. I was, however, raised to never speak of what I bought or what was bought for me (growing up). I never, ever spoke of what I got for Christmas or birthdays. I was raised outside of the US, though, where people strategically build their mega houses behind hills or walls so they are invisible to the public.

    Thank you.

Well, last night (Thurs, 10/21/10) we were at a charity Halloween fundraiser for HIV/AIDS. And there were people there we have recruited who have given many more thousands than we ever could. Oh, and also a US Congressman, and a whole mob of local mayors and other officials.

Ya know, I may brag, and I do, but I do it for a purpose. Match me gentlemen, or surpass me. But sit on your ass and do nothing except be a bitchy queen and you haven't criticized me at all. I challenge you to outdo me in gay charity, and then you can slam me, and I will concede to you.

And I think we SHOULD proclaim what we do for the gay community, as an encouragement. If you do it silently, and do it anonymously, what example to others is that? And if do others don't know, what model can they follow?

I'll take the hit of vanity, so long as I get the gay charitable message across. And as for indulging myself with toys, should I mention the toys I've given to children with HIV? Have any of YOU ever gone out and personally shopped for toys & clothes for kids dying of AIDS? I wonder...

So don't any of you play that game with me, just to be contrary queens. Put up or shut up.

I & my partner give heavily to gay charities, even while we indulge ourselves in what are actually rather minor ways. And I have sent gifts to RJ members right here, whom I thought were deserving and in need. So, please, don't give me any crap you other guys, OK?

Apple has supported anti-gay censorship by the way on their iOS platform - they are pretty bad in regard to censoring of content and technology in general though.

It does appear that you are gloating and showing off. Bragging about owning things that the general public cannot afford in an environment of men (and gay men - who can be more sensitive) is not a wise thing to do. I recall the post about your seven or eight thousand dollar bicycle. What 60 year old man really benefits from spending this kind of money on a bicycle when he only rides it recreation-ally? I think it does appear that you are showing off. For whatever reason you have to tell the whole world, through the internet, of your material possessions and how many of them you have. If you want to gloat and brag then be prepared to get some backlash. Especially during these times.

And just to be clear, I am not jealous. All I am simply saying is that it is sometimes better to "tone" down what I have. Because if it appears that I am flaunting what I have in front of a group of men then there will be jealousy and competition. For someone who has been on this planet for six decades, you should know this by now.

I agree with everything you've said. All his posts seem to generally be related to bragging about either something he's bought, the elite circles he moves with or the famous people he knows.
