Hey everyone, I often travel to Palo Alto on business (I'm also at the London School of Economics) and I'e always been surprised that there doesn't appear to be a gay bar or club there. Have I missed something?? Surely there'd be a demand for such a place...

Your best bet is to get in your rental car and drive 30 miles north on the Bayshore [101] Freeway to San Francisco. Stanford has a pretty active GLBT group operating from the Old Firehouse building [or used to be].

I'm from Palo Alto, there aren't any. San Francisco, as somebody else said, is your best bet.

You might as well drive up to the Castro where you'll find all the gays.

Not really, Palo Alto leans democrat. Lots of tech wealth, and they tend to lean pretty far left. But nearby Atherton (less than 10 minutes away) is the highest concentration of republicans in Northern California.

So probably lots of "bi" cottaging action. icon_rolleyes.gif

Palo Alto, along with all the other inner suburbs of the Bay Area, is cursed with being too close to SF for it to sprout its own gay bars. It's easier to just pick up and drive up to SF, so everybody does it, but then it becomes a vicious cycle since the few times bars in the 'burbs do try to make a go of it, they can't succeed. So up to SF you go.

I believe there is or was a gay bar in Mountain View called King of Clubs, but I haven't been there in years even though I work just down the road from it. Just too easy to go to SF instead. icon_rolleyes.gif

There may also be some places in San Jose. There's always the Watergarden in San Jose if you're just looking for action - it's a pretty nice facility actually.

I used to travel to Palo Alto weekly (lived in NY, but had an office in NY and Palo Alto), and found that somehow I managed to meet guys when I was out biking, or working out, or in the hotel bar, or whatever. I never did the SF commute. But I also never found a "gay bar" in the Palo Alto area. I was generally either meeting Stanford students (under and grad), or bi dad's in the area. I guess out guys were going to SF.
