So last night I could not get to sleep and I was a little bored so I checked out Logo's reality tv show The A List New York. You can catch the episodes on the logo web site. I am surprised I even watched both episodes online. It lived up or lived down to my expectations.

I am continually surprised that even though the reality tv show genre has been going strong for so many years that people still want to be on these shows knowing how most of the particpants wind up looking like awful people. I guess a group of nice people might not make for great tv.

Has anyone else watched the show?

To me its a bit unbalanced in that most of the partcipants are in some way connected to the fashion/style world in New York. You have two models (Rodiney and Austin), one hairdreser (Ryan), one modeling agent (Derek), a fashion photographer (Mike) and Reichen a reality tv show alum best known for his looks. New York is full of interesting and diverse people from a variety of professional fields so I wonder why the casting folks did not try for more variety.

Most of the guys have been known for their looks in one way or another in their careers.

Here are my thoughts on the guys.

Rodiney. Reichen's new live in boyfriend who is a fashion model. Seems like a decent guy who is in over his head with the rest of the crew and by over his head I am not remarking on his intelligence but rather his personal style. He comes off as a likeable but vulnerable guy. As good looking as the guy is, I do hope he is able to find something other than modeling. The main casting role this guy fills is the likeable underdog.

Mike Ruiz. Seems like a guy committed to his profession and he has enough talent and a strong enough work ethic to achieve and maintain a successful career. He seems to be a bit removed from the core group and it would not surprise me to find out that he finds the group boring and less mature than him. The casting role this guy fills is probably the mature "voice of reason" that balances the rest of the groups's drama.

Austin. Small town kid who moved to New York, got caught up in the fashion world and was kicked off the fashion merry-go-round by people way more powerful than him. Left New York for a time and is now desperate to fight his way back into the fashion world. He has been criticized in the first two episodes for "letting himself go" and now he needs to get back into shape. In any place other than New York or LA he would be a pretty good looking guy but even to my untrained eye he does not seem like a model. The casting role this guy fills is the villan of the season. My advice to the guy would be "Buddy you are 22, forget modeling and find another more durable and more viable, in the long term, way to support yourself for the rest of your life....modeling comes to an end for everyone and your best days may be behind you.

Ryan. Hairdresser married to a successful "finance" guy. Ryan comes off as the kept guy of the bunch. Even though he has his own hair salon it seems like more of a hobby than a true business. It would not surprise me to find out he was set up in the business by his husband and the enterprise loses money each month. Ryan is the kind of guy who needs to keep talking about how "hot" he thinks he is. I think the idea of being a trophy wife appeals to his ego.

Derek. Former fashion model who now works in a fashion model agency. Seems like a wounded person who is carrying a lot of baggage and likes to cause trouble. In the first episode he came across slightly less awful than the rest of the bunch but in the second episode he came off as a huge troublemaker and busybody. The casting role he fills is the other trouble maker to Austin's full season villan.

Reichen. The guy from the Amazing Race. I remember cheering for him and his then partner when they won the race. Deep down he might be an ok guy but he seems to have become addicted to fame and playing out aspects of his personal life in the media. At one point in one of the episodes he was remarking on some stuff Austin said and he said something like "I don't like people talking about my personal life". What???? Buddy you are on reality TV, the whole point is to get people (the audience) to talk about your personal life.

OK now I have spent too much time watching this show and writing this comment.

Anyone else watch the show so far?

There has been other threads about this show and after the second show, I still feel the same way. This show is made by the same people as The Real Housewives. It is essentially just another housewives- a group of shallow people who are delusional about their importance in the world. I know that Austin is the one were all supposed to hate, but the one that really irritates me is the busybody, drama queen Derek with his nose in everyone's business. He really needs a good kick in the ass.

I haven't seen it and am not really planning on it. What drives me crazy about these types of shows ("elite" people) is that they never a) have money or b) have status. It is just a bunch of people who are living lifestyles grander than they can afford. For all those Real Housewives shows, they all have tremendous amounts of debt and get foreclosed on...that isn't the true elite.

I watched the first episode and was thoroughly embarrassed for these self-declared A-listers. From the first couple moments, with each providing their evidence for why they're on the A-list, I knew this show was not going to leave a good impression.

I don't understand the obsession with making reality TV shows highlighting horrible people. Not all the guys are bad, and maybe it's the editing, but they're not really showing too many redeeming qualities about these guys. Even Reichen and his bf, who seem nicer than the other, apparently will get slutty/bitchy/catty later on.

In summation, this show is "delicious" (get it?).

It's not a social documentary. It's a reality TV show, which is based on a reality that very few people have...so it's "super reality"...or "fantasy reality"...or "bullshit reality". This kind of show is low-lying fruit for Americans...it's in our nature to believe that some day we can be on the A List, or be mega-wealthy or famous or whatever...but really it's just "equal opportunity to be a jackass". No one would watch these shows if it was about real life...who wants to see that? And the fact that it feeds into our expectations...and our privately, or not-so-privately held stereotypes, it's both entertaining and self-validating. For some. It's the trainwreck that we want it to be, so slow down and rubberneck when it's on or ambulance-chase it on DVR. You've got nothing else to do in your non-A List life.

Austin the wannabe model seems like the worst person by far. Average looking and thinks too highly of himself. Reichen is a dick to his boyfriend for taking Austins calls..wtf is he thinking

I agree to a certain extent that Reichen is not treating his boyfriend as well as he should but if we are both thinking about the same phone call scene, he got out of the hot tub to answer the call...there is nothing to suggest that he knew it was Austin before he got out of the hot tub. Whether or not he should have even answered the phone at all is another topic.

I can't believe I am even defending the guy but I do recognize that Reichen may not truly consider Austin an ex-boyfriend. According to him they barely hooked up two years ago and they never had sex. Both guys were single at the time and it seems like that just had some no strings light fun for a short time. Instead of walking away from the incident to only avoid each other down the road they tried to stay on friendly terms.

It seems in Reichen's mind the relationship moved into a place where he has, from time to time, been supportive of a young guy who he thinks needs some support.

Austin is douche for trying to get together with a guy who is in an exclusive relationship and I think that Reichen needs to do two things.

    1. Sit Austin down and try to define their friendship and if they can't reach agreement on that, kick the guy out of his life. We, the audience, seem to know that Austin's grand plan is to get back together with Reichen but maybe Reichen has not figured that out yet.

    2. Reichen also needs to remind Rodiney that Rodiney is a top priority in his life but not the only priority and once Reichen figures out what Austin is up to, he needs to let Rodiney know that Austin is no threat to their relationship.

I love this show. I find most of the guys being catty bitches but its amusing. Austin seem's too immature...but i didnt like when Derek called him fat. His body is fine...not a model body but he would be fine anywhere else. Derek is way too skinny for me.

One more thing I noticed last night.

Rodiney's fluency in English seemed to be better at some times than others.

I am not knocking the guy, I have tremendous respect for people who learn new languages and go to live in new countries. I think he is doing a great job on the language front.

I think he might have an unusual advantage over the other guys since English is not his first language. It seems he thinks a little more about what he is going to say before he says it while the other guys just say stuff without much thought to what they actually intend to say.

They are a bunch of wannabes and well i don't know it is funny watching be catty and bitch. It is a very nice show to get entertained lol so I love the show for that. I don't think it encompasses gay lifestyle over all but it captures some of it.

I was able to watch bout 5 minutes. I wanted to vomit. Those characters in the show are the kind of people I avoid and everything I would hate to be. Silly, pretentious, cheezy, crass and def not classy.

A shining example of ignorance is bliss.

LOL I just watched the series premiere on On Demand. What a bunch of pretentious, social climbing wannabes. The cast members with the most "status" are C-list celebrities at best; if you have to take the time to explain why you're famous, chances are you're not all that famous. I may tune in to a few more episodes for laughs.

I love this show. My favorite is Derek. Probably because we have pretty similar personalities. I can't stand Reichen,he cries and act like he's so upset when Rodiney leaves...yet he basically brought it upon himself .

Derek looks A LOT better this season. Maybe its because he has been working out? But whatever it is, he definitely got hotter
