Ok lately I been feeling like history is repeating itself and not the good history but the bad one. I feel this way because all I see is hate spewing from people. Now growing up in the south you learn to pick up quickly on it but recently its been getting bad. I was watching the view when whoopi got madd because of a somewhat racist comment was made about muslims. But, yea the question I guess is do you feel like we as a country are contributing to our own destruction?

I feel that something is happening. I don't know if we're repeating history. But I think there are lessons to be learned from the fall of the Roman Empire. Corruption. Dishonesty. Greed. Unlawfulness. When law is no longer upheld. When we compromise our values. When we have lost our principles/foundations, our moral center, we will crumble.

Yikes, how morbid. Excuse me, lemme hit the denial button. icon_eek.gif

Maybe this is why they called off the end of the world via the Mayan calendar...because "we the people" are going to destroy it long before 2012.

Have faith. This whole political climate will turn on itself much the same way the KKK imploded at the height of its influence (21 million+ members). There will be a back-stabbing for power (as it is already seeming to begin) as many of the attitudes are all or nothing. I found that the silver lining in the Arizona immigration law that was passed earlier this year showed how the TEA Party is severely divided on social issues between social conservatives and libertarians. After all, it was the Republican social conservatives of the religious right who hijacked the original intent and purpose of the TEA Party that started a decade ago.

End of the world will not happen,. per that book, as long as people are looking for it and the second coming. Congratulations, according to that book, you've just prevented it from happening.

I have noticed that the world seems to go thru trends or fads.

Like in the 19th century, western countries were all out to get colonies. Even the US went out and got itself a few.

In the 20th century, there was the Age of Dictators. Even the US broke precedence and elected FDR 4 times.

Right now, religious groups of the world seem to be going wacko with extremism.

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
When we can fully trust each other, there will be peace on earth
    War is not the answer.
Can't we all just get along?
    Think for yourself.
Sh*t or get off the pot!
Don't follow anyone. Be your own leader.
    Choose the Right.
    Live and let live.
    Honesty is the best policy.
    Put up or shut up!
Do unto others as you would others do unto you.
    Keep your hands to yourself.
Two wrongs don't make a right.
Leave a place better than you found it.
    Give till it helps.
Just say No to [insert any wrong here]!
The road to hell is paved with good intentions
    Do it!
    Tell the truth.
To be, or not to be.
I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!
The right way to be, is to be.

Maybe the downfall will be taking the wrong lessons from the Roman empire.

The main lesson to be learned from Rome is that it is unwise to stretch yourself (and your empire) beyond its means in a time of economic decline. Corruption, greed and dishonesty are just human traits, they're a constant throughout history.

Nobody outside the US has ever been impressed with the "moral center" of the US, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Yes, as a country, we tend to repeat our past mistakes.

--How can anybody not understand that the Republicans' policies bankrupted the country ?
--How can the voters be anxious to put them right back into office ?
--How can our Federal government NOT create jobs (as FDR and the Congress did, in the 30's) just so people could survive and keep their homes, and to get our economy going again ?
--How can we keep on sending our soldiers to their deaths in an endless war, just like Vietnam ?

In times of trouble (911, high unemployment, etc.) we tend to look for someone to blame. So, we lash out at innocent people.

You omit the crucial modern difference of the mass media. It is true that the US has seen many swings in the past, from right to left. As someone who has studied history I know you can basically predict them, like the climate changes of the past, that have happened on a regular cycle.

But something new & unprecedented has now occurred: mass media, and the abandonment of journalistic ethics. Today we have the Limbaughs, Becks & O'Reillys, masquerading as news commentators when they are in fact unprincipled right-wing demagogues.

This is the element we haven't had before to this degree, and that is leading the US down a path I have never seen before. I am therefore less optimistic than you. I see no implosion, but rather a triumph by the Right. And the severe risk to us gays, whom the Right abhors and wants eliminated.

Actually I see the opposite reaction and swing.. I see a severe backlash aimed AT the hard right..
Humans are slow to see when they are being led to the chamber.. but eventually they do and its a violent backlash to survive unencumbered.

Time will tell... But in a few weeks you will read southbeach1500 and others here crowing about anti-gay right wing triumphs at the US polls. Whether this bigoted tide can be reversed is doubtful, in my view. Certainly not in my declining lifetime.

I fear we gays are about to be driven back into the closet. southbeach can rejoice.

My professor and I were just taking about it last week! people nowadays have no common sense, common decency, and no respect for anything such as the environment, the elderly, childhood, honesty, values, morals, and human life!

After having said that there is something very positive about these kinds of negativity or bad vibes! people are no longer afraid to be themselves, they no longer feel the need to hide their true self; and that is good even thou it sounds a bit cynical to say. In contrast about four or five decades ago when people were very hypocritical in expressing their true feelings vs people nowadays who are more open minded and even encouraged to just be themselves even if it means hurting other people's feelings.

I have been noticing this "Ruthless People" mentality becoming more and more prevalent in society since 2000! I admit it used to disturbed me a great deal in the beginning but now no more! as a matter of fact I welcome it!! at least I no longer have to second guess or work a little extra harder to figure out people anymore. So whenever someone spew their hate on me or proudly admit they are a whore my usual response is "Oh o.k, good for you, and thank you for letting me know!! and so I simply walk away and mind my own business. It is a good feeling knowing that people's bluntness and openness makes it easier for one to weed out the ones who may otherwise suffocate or invade your personal space to grow.

To the OP! this world we live in is big enough for all kinds of people, good or bad alike! although I can assure you there still are plenty of good people left in this world who are very much a part of our lives even in the current times we live in! just look in the right places and you find them!!

Thanx guys for the replies glade to see I'm not the only one, but its hard to not notice it in my opinion. I mean gays r now a big minority and fighting for rights juss like black ppl did. America is turning its back on Mexicans coming over here, and in all fairness the pilgrims did the exact same thing to the native Americans then shot them. I see all this and get mad because I am like have we learned anything or are we just so self-righteous we don't care. But, honestly I'm more appalled by the black community because I do not see many if them comforting the gays or being sympathetic to them. I say this because it was not a century ago that my grandmother and mom was done the same way because of their skin, which they can't change, and now u have gays being done the same way because of who they choose to love. Then on top of that just like the black movement you have hate, racism, biased people in the same community fighting against each other and it pisses me off because all my life I been fighting these things because being a mixed race and gay in the south I am like a disease to ppl and the simple fact I'm not a stereotypical black guy I'm deemed even worse. But yea these events r frustrating and I'm almost like wow as a species we're dumb and need to be destroyed.

The point is, there is a "moral center" of principles, values, etc., out of which America became a nation. Those core values are key for its longevity and ultimate redemption in the eyes of the world. If Americans forget those, then she runs amok.

At this point in history, she seems to be forgetting. She appears to be running amok in many ways. Perhaps America is gradually coming to terms with recognizing that she is just as flawed as any other country. It is a humbling journey for this young country of a mere two centuries, but a necessary journey if America is able to go through such deep-soul searching as a nation.

All that said, the point is, America does have codified principles and values that gave her birth, and upon which she can stand -- a solid foundation for building and rebuilding. That is the core of what makes America America.

Yes .... we have a habit of forgetting about history
and as it has been said
Those who forget about history are doomed to repeat it
and we don't have too far back to look

Take the state of our politics right now
we're just coming off of a republican binge that has sent us into debt levels that we haven't seen since the beginning of our country
foreign wars that have made us the hate objects of an entire world
and let's not forget the millions of innocent men and women who were killed in our name
soldiers who died for a lie
a party who systematically crippled our government, our schools and our emergency planners
and then turn around and say .... See I told you government doesn't work

....... and we're set to now elect a whole slew of them again??????

Youdda think we mighta learned a lesson by now icon_confused.gif
