Very, very cool stuff. I'm interested to know more about how the electron transport chain factors into this. Yet perhaps the plethora of science fiction allegories has cautioned me to think about possible backfiring of this technology.

Before you know it, we're all going to be used as batteries.

Now if only they can find out how the cell generate that electricity. I "think" I already know, but will save the techno-garb till the scientists do more research.

A prime example would be neurons, Paul. How those work is already taught in high school biology.

Now that is what I call science research and observation. Yep, it's kinda scary, because it leads to the unknown (as I see it.)

It is a far cry from what I've been reading lately, that Chiropractics being a science, and all that tomfoolery that goes with it:- "Chiropractics win!" - " doctors are drug dealers", and on it goes.

A "practice" which has its origins with a dickhead of an occultist who conducted a seance to receive "hidden truths" from the other world cannot, for heavens sake, be classed as a scientific research on the same level as the article here from Science Daily.

    Please guys - Wake up!

The electron transport chain within the cells is pretty well understood. It's the external links between different organisms and between organisms and and minerals, etc. that are where the excitement is at now. People have been poking at it for 20 or 30 years, but there are now finally tools to do good experiments.

(Not to say that there aren't other mechanisms out there that people talk about over beers during conferences. But nobody has good enough evidence to go public. )

One mystery involved in this is why metabolic processes in anoxic environments are distributed between multiple different species, while in aerobic environments a single species can carry out the process within one cell. Somehow there must be an energetic advantage to passing electrons (and carriers) across multiple membranes and compartments.

    I've known a few neurons.

Oh wait, that's morons. Nevermind. icon_razz.gif

Research confirms that cells purchase electricity directly from Southern California Edison, who get it from some outfit in the mid west, with a support hotline in Bombay. The electricity is rerouted from Area 51 in the hills of New Mexico where it is manufactured under the authority of a secret corporation located in the north of Scotland and owned by a secret society of mutants who plan to take over all cells at the time of the appoco-lisp, rescheduled from 2012 to...

Does this mean that electric cars are going to be mass produced in China now?
