Jose Luis Rodrigues Zapatero and his Democratic Socialists won the election yesterday in Spain. This is significant because very soon after being elected he pushed through the parliament a bill giving full and equal rights to gays and lesbians including Gay Marriage and Adoption Rights. There are only two other countries in Europe that have that equal protection under the law. The Catholic Church and the opposing party, the Partido Popular, were very much opposed to this law and it was a big issue in the campaign. The PSOE, the Democratic Socialists, won 169 seats in Parliament to the PPs 153 seats.

Another thing that is significant is that this bucks a trend in Europe where the conservatives have been winning over the socialists in elections in the larger countries, where the conservatives have been using the fear of immigrants to win over the electorate.

    Hi there.
Yes Mr Zapatero has been re-elected and many are very happy about it.

I hope it serves the conservative party right for approaching the EXTREMELY CONSERVATIVE CATHOLIC CHURCH here in Spain to have their election support.

They (the church) had described the legalisation of homosexual marriage as the worst sinn in the last 2000 years. They made enormous efforts to yell out that this would be the end of the (sacred) family -a man and a woman only-.

I feel very grateful towards all those citizens who with their vote also said: BISHOPS STICK TO YOUR CHURCHES, WE DON´T BUY YOUR REACTIONARY VIEWS!

I hope PSOE (Partido Socialista Obrero Español) keeps it´s good work.

I only hope conservatives in the United States stop saying he was first elected because of the 2004 train bombing in Madrid.

Congrats to the people of Spain for making the right choice.

They'll never stop saying it because once they have had their talking points handed to them they harp on them regardless of truth content. In fact, truth only gets in the way of repeated propaganda.

I'm glad he pushed the equality legislation, but I sure hope he doesn't have much success with the socialist agenda.

Modern European socialism is hardly Marxist-Leninism. Frankly, we could use a little socialism right here now, let alone in Spain.

Don't get confused by the word, European Socialism has nothing to do with Marxism. Indeed, if something remains almost equal, whether the socialists or conservatives gain, is economy.

Zapatero just has introduced historical laws (I'm sure in the future will be considered as "historical") in the social context. Not only gay marriage and adoption, but also simplified divorce proceedings and laws to promote gender equality (permit legal gender switch without surgery), explaining homosexualiy as a normal fact at primary schools (among with other basic knowledge about citizenship regarding immigrants, racism, and other topics) though private catholic ones are skipping it, and so on.

Congrats on the election win Spain.

Politicians and parties like these are needed in a world that shows continuing bigotry and hatred.

The world doesn't end if people are granted equality.
