Ricky Martin has been giving rounds of interviews lately on Oprah, Univision, and other sources regarding his coming out as a gay man. Did anyone else find his story relevant to your own story being a gay man?

    Hey Chidude,

Hi there and I miss half of the show but I do find him sexxy as hell! He dump his boyfriends to a new boyfriend. I wouldn/t mind to have him as a boyfriend.

He has a new single and book that both came out recently. That's the reason for the interviews...at least on Oprah. She just had Portia DeGeneres on yesterday talking about coming out (and eating disorders). She also has a new book that just came out. Regardless of the reason for the interviews though, I really think it's important for stars like these to share their coming out experience in the mainstream media. Let's face it, Oprah has a HUGE following. So, the more positive exposure gay people get on that show, the better. Oprah has actually had quite a few gay episodes this season.

From a personal perspective, my mom LOVES Oprah and watches her religiously. So, this will help (hopefully) my eventual coming out to her and the rest of my family as well. Right now I'm just not ready to tell them...and I really don't think they're ready to hear it. But, the more stories like this that are shared, the easier it is for everyone to come out. Like Oprah said during the show, "if everyone were to come out right now, the World would be a completely different place."

I have to mention too, that it wasn't just about his book and new song. There was a big part devoted to his kids and how they are living as a "normal" family. I think this was the most impressive for the mainstream audience...at least it was to the studio audience. This kind of coverage will help normalize the idea of gay adoption/gay families/gay marriage.

And finally, to badwild, Ricky didn't dump his last boyfriend. He actually rejected Ricky which pushed him further into the closet.

Find the show on Hulu. I found it quite touching.

Hmmm, a story of staying in the closet for a decade despite having millions of dollars and fame. Nope, no similarity with my life.

i don't get the argument that goes, 'he's got a book coming out, he's only on the TV to promote it. he's only doing it to make money.' well, isn't that what singers do when they have new albums out or what actors do when they have a new movie or new TV show out?

i've been a fan of his, and of oprah's. i watched the show and thought it very moving, very worthwhile and since there are still many people who hold on to stereotypes and weird thoughts about gays, his coming out and reminding moms and grandmas and people of different cultural backgrounds that this is what a gay man looks like (in addition to all the other men who are gay) is a good thing. if anyone who criticizes him had watched this show they would have seen men, adult men, who were given that extra strength and courage needed to come out, as well as one mom who was seemingly OK with her son's sexuality but never really asked him about his life, until she heard about ricky martin coming out, as well.

it's great that he is telling his story, to set the record straight, no pun intended. if his publicity tour helps others out of the closet and helps families, friends, etc. understand us better, even better.

What? Ricky Martin was in the closet? Man, straights know nothing. I only just found out that nobody outside Louisville and the gay community knows that Mitch McConnel is gay. Go fig.

It might seem too late, but it was the right time for him to come out. Congrats to him.

That's because everyone outside of Louisville heard that the Senator had a wife. Actually a second wife.

yeah, I would have like to have seen him do it during his Barbra Walters interview. The one where she asked him straight out and he lied. OK, so maybe he wasn't ready then, but it sure would have helped if he had. I can only imagine the number of celebrities that would be out now if he a chosen to lead instead of fallow.

He just wasn't ready. Ready to capitalize on it that is.
