The Day After...What Do We Do Now??

It is the day after the mid-term elections, and it was not a pretty sight across the country. It's bleak enough if you are a progressive person, but being gay...it is much worse.

Here is what "could" happen going forward now that the Republican/Tea Bag Wackos have had their say...and carefully notice my insertion of the word, "could." This doesn't mean it will happen.

    BRACE YOURSELVES BECAUSE...

Any and all gay rights issues will be off the table until at least 2014 until we can reclaim the House and solidify our narrow margin in the Senate. DADT is not going to come up, and save for the possible hearing of California's Prop 8 in the US Supreme Court, any thoughts of gay marriage and equality-related issues are also dead.

ENDA will also be tabled until 2014.

The Anti-Bullying measure proposed by Senator Menendez of New Jersey will never receive a fair hearing as conservatives feel it's okay to harass and pummel young gay men with insults and inflict pain.

This is a huge reach here, and yes....by my standards....a powerful statement here, but I see racial divide raise it's ugly head in the next two years. You still have these far right militia groups holding forth in some western states. You have the influence of the Tea Party, which face it...it would never have come into existance if we did not elect an African American President. And you still have the presence of backward, segregation-fueled hatred in many states in the deep south, Florida included.
This is a potentially toxic recipe for an "Us Versus Them" situation which could get it's start....in red states! With conservatives in power "at most levels" in the Federal and State governments, I'm afraid this is going to spill over to hatred toward the gay community and some tragic events possibly could take place.

It's unlikely we would see the return of the signs from the 1950's that state, "Colored Entrance," but....don't be alarmed if that "could" make a return....

All because of a backlash against Democratic liberals and moderates....Shameful.

Again....note the sprinkling of the word "could."

    WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NOW....

    1. Be mad as hell about this!
    2. Join and support the Human Rights Campaign with your dollars and your time to fight back against this toxic, life-altering, future clouding, conservative wave.
    3. Become involved in your gay community to assist other gay organizations. They need support too.
    4. Become a member of your County Democratic Executive Committee. Attend the meetings. Be an activist. Work with the movers and shakers on the grassroots level to fight conservatives at every turn.
    5. Know the leaders in your area's gay community. Flesh out their intentions to seek public office, and support them 100 percent if they do run.
    6. Watch your back! RealJock's own Glenn Beck, southbeach1500, states gay people will not be rounded up and placed in concentration camps. I'm not sure I believe him completely as the harassment will be ratcheted up even more and with their majority, it now gives them the freedom to really do some serious damage. Be very careful. Don't go back into the closet, as that is what conservatives want, desire and pray for (when they aren't trying to convert us to being straight).

    Finally....

    IT COULD BE WORSE....

You could be living in Florida......Around 12 Noon today, Democratic candidate for Governor, Alex Sink, conceded to Republican/Tea Party/Moron Rick Scott. Rick Scott was the CEO that caused the demise of the HCA/Columbia hospital chain by stealing Medicare funds from the Federal Government and ultimately denying health care to many needy people. Rick Scott has never held elective office before and running one of the most populated states in the US is not a position where you "learn on the job." He's a part of the Radical Right and to top it off, the Florida House and Senate cemented their hard-right base yesterday too. Every State Constitutional Officer elected is also ultra conservative.

    Goodbye Key West?
    So long Wilton Manors?
    See 'ya Ft. Lauderdale?
    Toodles Gay Days in Orlando?

    Hello Bankruptcy?
Hi tax breaks to the ultra wealthy?
Greetings cuts in Medicaid (that's already on the table)?
Welcome to a state where a majority of the people are hovering at the poverty level?

You bet. Florida in four years will be where California is today--if not worse.

    Thanks, Republicans....

Let's get to work, guys....let's start turning this around NOW. Don't wait!

    Point/Counterpoint here:

    OK, first:

Florida, unlike California, is a much more (compared to California) well run state.

(Not true. We ran up huge deficits under Jeb Bush when our state mandates a balanced budget and we are still wallowing in red ink, and....name an accomplishment our Legislature has done during the Bush/Crist years? If you call FCAT an accomplishment, you are seriously wrong)

Second, Florida, unlike California, hasn't had decades of Democrat-controlled legislature in the state house bankrupting the state.

    (False: See the above)

Third, Florida can't give "tax breaks to the ultra wealthy" because we don't have an income tax in Florida. Florida taxes are based on property ownership, which means that if you rent a home or apartment in Florida, you are pretty much getting a free ride.

(Again not true! Jeb gave tax breaks to the wealthiest of all Floridians which has run up our budget deficits. How do you think Jeb's good buddy Edward Codina became wealthier? And for good measure, there's the 20 million dollar home Harris Rosen has in the Orlando area. Good Republicans and those are just 2 examples....all made stinking wealthy because of our Republican controlled state. Oh, there were cuts in Medicaid when Jeb was governor to fork over the money to the wealthiest of all Floridians).
Fourth, I have no idea what effect all the additional Medicaid requirements being forced down the state's throats due to Obamacare will have... but like most things Obamacare, it can't be good.

(Wrong again, pal! This has nothing to do with Healthcare Reform. Scott wants to cut Medicaid further. So if you live in Florida....you get sick.....you're poor....you die. That is what is wanted, apparently. Maybe it's a scheme to eliminate the neediest of Floridians---a care package from the Republican Party in our state)
Fifth, most of the citizens of Florida are not "hovering at (or below) the poverty level."

(I'm betting on this one. Just give it four years. Maybe by then you'll stop and think, "I'm not better off now than when I voted for Rick Scott. I'm in worse shape."

I can always count on you to make me smile...and think. I'll pass on the "tea" and have a cup of coffee instead!

I'm being as realistic as I can be here and everything stated here came with plenty of thought behind it. Remember, I did mention the word "could" a lot in this narrative. There is now a spin off forum about Florida and what to expect from Rick Scott in the future and that one paints a more dismal picture.

I don't plan on sitting on the sidelines wringing my hands. I'm going to move forward myself and do what is right for us in the gay community and for those of us living in Florida and the US.

D'oh. SB says, "Florida taxes are based on property ownership, which means that if you rent a home or apartment in Florida, you are pretty much getting a free ride."

lol, the rent is inflated to cover the cost of the owner's taxes. Yeesh.

Hmm.. in one breath you harp about how great the Florida economy, wealth, etc is then in the next you say things are so bad rents are so low it doesn't cover the costs the owner has to bear.

    Hahahahahahaha!

Florida sometimes has sort of an odd sense with taxes. I note that on my last tax bill for the home here, I paid $24,000 to support the local hospital. Yet, in the grand scheme of things were I to declare Florida my state of residency, I'd gain one heck of an increase in income -- to most folks.
