How to eat while busy with work?

    Hey guys, I've been having eating issues recently and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

    I work in real estate, and when I don't have a current client my hours are incredibly flexible and open. When I do have a client (or more than one) however, I'm literally working from the second I get up to the second I go to bed. Not only that, but I'm moving around constantly...from my office to the property/properties in question to the escrow office to the client's home...you get the picture.

    When I'm that busy and constantly mobile and spontaneous I find it near impossible to eat right. I actually do manage to get gym time in, but the eating presents a problem. This past week I've been working on three different projects for clients and every day I've either felt the following: a) borderline anorexic because I've skipped meals or haven't eaten enough, or b) feeling incredibly unhealthy because in order to counteract my hunger and the days when I don't eat enough I feel like I'm stuffing myself full of unhealthy, high-calorie, high simple carb options (ie, take-out pizza slices or whatever croissants/bagels people have left around the office).

    For those of you with work schedules similar to mine, what are some tricks you've learned to keep your eating habits stable and healthy? When I am in the heat of a pulling together an offer, negotiating a contract or previewing properties I really don't have the time to sit down and have five home cooked meals like some of you guys do (not that others aren't working hard, but because hours in real estate are not based on a set schedule but rather by what needs to be done at that given moment). I'm really looking for those RJers who also have to eat healthy while constantly working/on the go.

    Cook and prepare ahead in larger batches and then store them in serving sized containers you can take with you in a cooler bag. When you know you're going to have access to a microwave, bring things you can heat up to eat. When you know you aren't going to have access to a microwave, have things ready that can be eaten cold.

    I'd also recommend keeping plenty of water with you, cleaning wipes and breath freshener if you need to have a quick meal between clients.

    I don't want to sound rude, but I completely get this...the question is more that I'm asking for how others have managed to plan because so far I haven't come up with a satisfactory solution. Unlike other jobs where it's all set hours and breaks, my schedule is incredibly spontaneous and reactive, making it is hard to set aside times to cook (unless it is in advance like the previous poster suggested) during the day. So I'm asking for others in fields with busy, non-traditional schedules and highly mobile careers to share their planning and logistics tips, not just tell me it's about planning and logistics.

    See, that is the problem. Real estate is an industry that is literally impossible to schedule an entire day of. You can absolutely have a list of tasks you have to accomplish during a day, but since so many of them are reactive (ie, doing a task once you've received the necessary paperwork/information from your client, a loan officer, escrow officer, pest inspector, graphic designer, newspaper advertising coordinator, whatever) and most of it also involves traveling, you are always on the move and your schedule is always changing. It requires a great deal of flexibility and quick response times. That's why I've been asking for tips from people who have similar careers who need to plan on the go most days.

    Exactly what he said. Batch cook simple fare late at night or early in the morning when there's the least chance of a work interruption. For starters, it's not that difficult to hardboil a few dozen eggs, defrost bags of frozen vegetables (more nutrient than fresh since they're frozen at the peak of freshness), boil a few cups of brown rice and steel cut oatmeal, brown some ground chicken or turkey, keep several pouch bags of tuna and salad handy and prefill several shaker cups with protein powders. If you're a bit more ambitious or proficient in the kitchen you can broil, grill or pressure cook meats too.     The trick is not to be so rushed or tired that you forget to take your prepacked cooler bag with you to work!

    I'm assuming you have a vehicle, and that you're driving around to your office/your clients/properties etc. Buy a box of breakfast/health bars and stash it in your vehicle. While you're en route, tackle one of those. They generally hold anywhere from 120-160 calories each, enough to give you an energy boost and keep your metabolism going, all the while providing you with fibre and nutrients as opposed to greasy, fatty alternatives. icon_smile.gif
