Are personal trainers full of s**t?

    This morning I observed a pt moving an overweight client from strenght training cable exercises to back presses to leg lifts to stability ball stuff, all of it b.s. It was b.s. not because the exercises were themselves off, but because the client clearly needed to focus on intense cardio to #1 burn off the extra before any muscle was going to be showing. This incident, sadly, is one I've seen many times.

    Going on my fourth gym now and it seems like really good personal trainers who aren't fat, aren't ripping off a client, who do pay attention, and who do get result with their clients are a rare find. I mean, I thought you had to be super-certified to do this type of work, but based off of what I've seen around, maybe not? Is this something anyone else has noticed? Any WTF stories??? THX!

    As with all professions, I'm sure there's good and bad. I've personally never used a trainer, but I know someone who's going through the certification process now, and in his case it's basically taking and passing a few classes.

    I think it's the client's responsibility to do a little self education as well. There's so much information available on the internet that it's easy to get a general knowledge of the subject. Where I think the trainer adds value is tailoring that information to the client's individual situation, and also providing motivation. Don't be afraid to ask questions if your trainer is doing something that you don't fully comprehend. If he/she can't explain it to you in a satisfactory way, find someone else.

    Nope it shows the PT knows his stuff and you really dont have a clue what you are talking about

    I agree- I recently hired a personal trainer at my gym... and I'm not the skinniest kid of the block. He doesn't have me on the treadmill for hours on end. In fact he has cut back what I usually would do in a week because I stress my joints with my body shape (the weight of my body from being 6'5") .

    We do circuit training to build more muscle so I can burn fat all day everyday from the extra energy needed. We cap off each of the extended sessions with a cornerstone exercises that burns off the last bit of energy and then I power through high intensity cardio for 30 mins. And its been working wonders with the food plan.




    To me what you seen the PTs doing is correct!
