Sigh, my bf is a victim of USA puritanical values towards men's swimwear...he has a good body but is reluctant to wear a speedo at the pool/beach.

Once in a while he'll sport a mid-cut, only after I've forced it upon him.

We are headed to Thailand this year, where speedos are more common than they are Stateside.

I'd like to see him wear them -- any tips/tricks for making him not give a s$#! about what others think?

Lots of compliments, buy one for him and get him to try it on and say how great it looks - I recommend trunks from Aussiebum!

If he's not happy about the really high-cut traditional speedo style, there are plenty of sexy trunks that have a slightly more generous cut, or even square cut. They will still look great on the beach and he might feel more comfortable.

There's no point forcing him into wearing trunks he isn't comfortable in.

Steal & trash his swimsuits, then he'll have to buy local in Thailand, which will be mostly briefs.

i've never understood the uniquely American contradiction of spending time in the gym, doing cardio and weight lifting, controlling one's diet, sweating, suffering, denying....all to "get in shape"....and then being too afraid/embarrassed/uptight to wear a bathing suit that shows off the results and sucess of all their hard work and dedication.

maybe you should consider enjoying your time with him and not worrying about what he's wearing for swimwear

My dear mch, it has to do with revealing your package. In the US, men are eunuchs -- we don't have dicks & balls in public. We're supposed to hide & disguise them. It's not at all about showing our builds, but about our balls.

US men in public are supposed to be like girl's dolls or store mannequins: a little bulge, but no detailed outlines. Gawd forbid we should actually imagine how a man is built.

So that's why Speedos are rare on US beaches (except here on Fort Lauderdale's Sebastian, close to a couple of dozen gay hotels). And why most American men wear long baggy board shorts, while their female companions wear the skimpiest of bikinis. A strange cultural twist that only occurs in this country.

Sorry but I think you should let him alone. My ex used to try to get me into one of those as well. Do you want him to wear something that makes him feel uncomfortable in public. He is who he is: imagine him pushing you to eat something or wear something u don't care for? He'll appreciate you more for not pushing I believe.

Let him do what he wants.
Assuming that he believes this way because of what is common isn't the best way to look at it. Maybe he doesn't feel comfortable wearing one.
    Or just hide his swimshorts...

I'm going to take out the board shorts from our luggage for our upcoming trip to Asia this winter and put a good stash of mid-cuts and speedos in. icon_smile.gif

Of course, shorts in Asia cost $5, but it's the gesture. icon_smile.gif

perhaps he's intimidated because his bf looks so darn good in HIS speedo?

he may be concerned that he won't look as good (wearing a speedo bathing suit) as diablo does?

Good luck. I don't know there is anything my partner could do to convince me to wear speedos in public. icon_cool.gif

I LOVE Speedos. icon_smile.gif I've worn them out in public and I've gotten no complaints.

And remember ... this is coming from a guy who grew up on a farm near a tiny town of 700 people in South Dakota.

If I can do it, then he certainly can!

Speedos are the mountain every gay man must climb at some point. I wore them in the 1970s through '90s, when I was 5'8" and consistently 147 lbs. An aging porker now, 40 lbs overweight with a pot belly, I wouldn't dare today. And no, sorry, there's no pics of which I'm aware.

Yet I know gay men locally who wear Speedos successfully into their 50s, as I did. If your body allows it, your age and society's judgement shouldn't be a factor.

In the 1960s we had a popular phrase: "If ya got it, flaunt it!" Same thing today with Speedos.

If he doesn't want to wear a speedo...then don't make him wear a speedo.

    Board shorts look better anyways.

Your man should wear what is most comfortable for him Let him wear his board shorts. He may even change his mind once he arrives in Thailand and sees that everyone else is wearing speedos. But, let the decision be his and support him in his decision.

It would be a cold day in hell before he'd wear a speedo. He'd simply tell me to do it, I'm the one into fitness, he wouldn't.

Well let him wear what he wants. I know it sucks to see a beautiful guy trying to hide his perfect body but he has been brain washed to feel ashamed of wearing a speedo in public and he would need some serious help to overcome that fear. I wear speedos on certain beaches and wear board shots on certain beaches. I wear speedos because I have worked hard to get my body in shape and I don't mind showing it off and on the selected beach where I would put them on I have gotten favourable comments and plus I am only young once.

I thought the usual excuse was "people will think I'm gay if I wear a Speedo" but clearly this is not an issue as your bf is...well... your bf !!!

For everyone: you only get one life (as far as we know!) so wear what the hell you like and enjoy it. icon_wink.gif XXX

Compromise. Suggest he wear the speedo under his board shorts. If he's comfortable losing the board shorts once on the beach, then so be it. If not, leave it alone. That way, too, he's not fully commited and can pull the board shorts back on if he wishes. He probably really wants to overcome his inhibition, but needs to retain a sense of control. Chances are, the more you coerce or manipulate the situation, the more disappointed you will be with the unintended consequences and neither of you will have a good time.

Well, I wouldn't call it an act of persuasion, because people ought to wear what they want (even if it is damned-fool stoopid-looking.)

However, most of the guys that I dive with have come around to wearing speedos under their wet suits, because it's easier to get in and out. Between dives, most guys seem to immediately pull a pair of cargo shorts or sweats over them. But when hanging out on the boat, some of the guys eventually drop the cargos. Peer pressure, or...?
