Meeting Guys Outside the Gay Environment

Have you met guys outside the gay scene whether for friendship or dating? I'm not into the clubbing scene and I only go to sports bars a few times a month. Personally I enjoy the outdoors, sports, and laid back environments, but it seems impossible to find any guys who are interested in the same things - at least here in Dallas. I know not all guys who go to gay clubs/bars are into that scene, but there has to be a better way and place to meet. Any recommendations or past experiences? I'm afraid that if I don't go to a gay club or bar I will never have a social circle.

Sorry, most gay people are gay so finding them outside out of their natural environment (which I don't know how an environment can have a sexuality...) is like finding a wild pikachu (though the probability of catching or finding one is 1 in 8192). Just sayin...

I'm okay with hijacking this thread and talking about Pokemon.

But on on a not-hijacking note, I'm an art major in college and there are gays everywhere. Do studio classes count as the "gay scene"?

Well by gay environment I mean gay clubs and bars. I'm just wondering if guys can meet guys in an environment that is not gay oriented. For example, straight couples sometimes meet in a grocery store, in a coffee shop, park, etc. I'm just wondering if it is possible to meet a guy in a similar circumstance outside a gay club or bar. I realize there is a risk of hitting on a guy who is not gay and I am curious if anyone had either a positive or negative experience.

Yea it can happen. first of all you mention outdoors so I wonder if you have checked out http://www.gayoutdoorclub.org/ which is based in Dallas. The website looks out of date but maybe write to the guy whose email is on it and see if it is still viable.

Actually this whole page of links appears to be gay Texas groups that aren't bars:

    http://www.gayoutdoorclub.org/LINKSclubsoklahoma.html

http://www.gayoutdoors.org This is a national site with membership/profiles so you could actually check people out before meeting them or maybe plan your own event with local guys.

I don't want to assume anything about you but you would be likely to meet gay guys at progressive political or social outreach organizations... have you considered volunteering?

I met my boyfriend in church. And not a gay church.

Yes I know this. However, Ash always had pikachu as a starter pokemon. Not any of those shittie ass 'starters'. So I consider yellow to be the original and red and blue to be pre-gamers.

LOL Love how we hijack with Pokemon icon_razz.gif

But back to the OP, I met my ex in my engineering lab. That's right Engineering lab...And he wasn't an engineer...He was a Physicist icon_razz.gif
He was a friend of a classmate a year younger than me, we made eye contact and I proceeded to draw his friend into conversation so he had to talk to me icon_biggrin.gif

We joked and it was around tattoos and I said something along the lines of, "As long as you don't tattoo someone's name on your chest...Like Bill..."
He gave me a look, and I smiled. 2 weeks later we were dating icon_biggrin.gif

It didn't end well with him (he was a tad bit on the crazy), but just saying it's totally possible icon_razz.gif

Unfortunately I've never met anyone outside of friends or a website, I get no kind of attention when I'm out at clubs, bars, mall, etc. I'm sure it's possible for most people.

I've had guys approach me in grocery stores, etc (I'm too shy to do that) and met a couple of guys in martial arts classes. But I think, outside of the usual gay hangouts, NETWORKING is your best bet. Just be open to socializing with a lot of different people, be yourself, and don't be hesitant to let them know you're gay and single. You will definitely meet a lot of guys that way; whether they're you're TYPE or not... well thats another discussion.

    Light... the fire.
    Hahahahaha.

And I resent the Pikachu bullshit! I didn't want that fuck following me everywhere anyways! I'd much rather see a happy Squirtle than a stupid Pikachu. Little bitch got enough of his own spin off's!

I like how a thread seeking relationship advice was derailed by Pikachu.

Yeah, of course you can...you just need balls to go up to a gay you are into. Well, to be honest, I think that is any enviroment. If you are interested just go up to them and have confidence. I went up to a gay on the train. We were hold the the same bar, he was looking at me, i was looking at him. I asked"hey, are you noticing me?" He replies in an awkward yet shy way "uh , no!", trying to act cool and not give himself up. I said" Well, I was noticing you, hi my name is Frank." 5 minutes later, I get his number, and we saw each other for a while. It didn't work out, but at least i know that now, in this point of my life, I can go up to a guy, notice his body language, see if he is checking me out, check him out, and then just go for it.

I've met a guy at a grocery store, in parks (I spin fire, so it's easier to draw attention to myself, then I tend to hit on the furry guys), bowling, out mountain biking, parties, snowboarding, and other places. I'm sure I've hit on plenty of straight guys, guys that weren't interested, etc. Who cares though? Chances are, the person is not going to attack you. Then again, maybe that's easier to say when the person just saw you lighting yourself on fire...

I share the same problem. I NEVER meet gays when I go to regular hangouts and clubs(not danceclubs, like groups). Im ALWAYS the token gay guy with everyone, and it would be nice to have some platonic gay friends

Not all of us live in the glamourous 'gay ghetto.'
I happen to meet guys in non 'gay environments.' Believe me, when we're taken out of our context, we present ourselves much more naturally around everyone than in an environment where we're expected to act a certain way.
And that makes us attract other homosexual men.

    it's possible

im pretty much a straight guy when it comes to everything except the fact that, you know, im into dudes, so i fit in with my comrades at work. i thought i was the only gay one but lo-and-behold! i found one, and a damn good looking oen too. now we're sorta talking.

so yeah. coworkers. haha. and i know better than to shit where i eat, so i'm being careful not to fuck this up in any tragic way hah

Have to admit, In college yeah it was easy to openly ask someone once the conversation started but going out in the quote un quote real world, it is difficult at least for me to talk to someone i don't know even if we are making eye contact. or whatever

In all seriousness, just talk to a guy if you're into him. Give him your number if you're comfortable with it. Did it a few times over the past few weeks. First guy didn't call; his loss. Second guy was straight but flattered that I hit on him. Got some dates with the third guy, but things didn't work due to timing. Still, he was an awesome guy.

Its worth the shot, you never know who you might find.
