Mystery 'Missile' seen off the west coast of the US last night, did anyone see it?

Did anyone else see the missile launch that "never happened" last night? I googled it this morning to see if there was any further news on what it was but there's a surprising lack of follow up on it.

The Pentagon says that it looks like it was a contrail off of a jet or plane, but I dunno....I personally have never seen a ball of fire follow the tail of an airplane and leave a streak of smoke across the sky....

    Pentagon: Col. Dave Lapan
"There is no evidence to suggest that this is anything else other than a condensation trail from an aircraft."

The FAA also replayed radar images of large areas off the west coast in an attempt to spot any fast moving objects in the area where the sighting occured and were unable to find anything and no clearance had been given for aircraft in the area where the spotting occured... so what exactly happened here?

A few months ago there was a confirmed missile launch from Travis Air Force base that was unannounced to local residents, yet the Pentagon claims ALL missile launches near us metropolitan cities notify nearby local residents before hand which was obviously not the case. I know because like many other San Diegan's I saw the streak fly across the sky that night, but had no clue what it was until local news investigated.

Smells like b/s, looks like b/s...

This is certainly weird, but it probably comes down to a rocketlaunch that the Goverment wants to hide for some reason.

What baffles me is that other countries should have picked it up also.

IMHO it was a Chinese or North Korean diesel powered submarine which can run on electric engines. They run extremely quiet and one got very close to a US carrier group a few years ago.

Even if it was an aircraft, they should be able to pull the FAA air traffic control radar replay for that time and area and confirm it as such. If it was not squawking for some reason, the primary radar should still have picked it up. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I smell a rat.

An unknown aircraft in the ADIZ (squawking or not) would have been met by a welcoming committee.

    Just found this:

"The FAA, when they looked at the radar replay for that time period, they went out some distance from the coast, and identified that they had no fast moving unidentified objects in that area at that time. They did have commercial airliners in that area. None of those commercial airliners reported anything unusual," he said. "So all of those things point again to the fact that we believe this is an aircraft condensation trail."

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/8124647/Pentagon-believes-missile-trail-was-caused-by-aircraft.html

Which means we can look forward to the FAA press conference showing the radar replay of the "commercial airliners in that area" at that time. No?

Incidentally, it is reassuring that the DoD originally stated they knew nothing about the trail or what caused it but were nonetheless not concerned!

Even allowing for optical illusion, I would say "No". It looks like a fairly steep trajectory and it is unlike any con trail I have ever seen.

Do our RJ resident pilots have any thoughts?

I'm a pilot and am familiar with the area, specifically looking west over Pacific at sunset. Even considering a helicopter at say 1,500 ft, looking upwards towards a plane at say 30-40,000 ft, or descending down through 25,000 ft., the back of the contrail just does not look like anything consistent with a plane's trajectory.

Everyone asked me if I saw this... I didn't. By the time I left my office it was already dark.
Truthfully, I am not sure I buy this whole "airplane" story either...

It was clearly the result of RickRick having another hissy fit over one of IHG84's posts icon_eek.gif
