Ok boys, help me out here. Give me some tips or rules about text messaging to a guy. Like when is the best time to text message? Is grammar so important? What to say and not to say (like babe, sexy, sugar daddy, papa bear, etc). How about sending too many text messages?

I hate when people text me early in the morning or late at night...
Ask him what time he wakes up and goes to sleep at or when he is good to text.

Always err on sending less than more texts.

SMS protocol is 160 characters per message. If you send 200 characters, it will send 2 texts. One with 160 characters, and one with 40 characters.

Yeah that make sense. I think it will be so annoying to have two text messages sending at the same time. lol

Agreed. There's no point in hiding who you are because he's going to find out eventually.

Your first mistake is text messaging. If you have any class, and real communications skills, you TALK with folks, on the phone, or in person. At 28 years old, this is a social skill you should have acquired years ago.

Except there are a lot of people who prefer to text. There are times that I like to text when I wouldn't otherwise be able to talk to someone. Sometimes I txt just because it's the cheaper option.

Welcome to my generation Chucky. SMS text messaging is so popular these days and not so many young guys around my age like to talk over the phone. We sometime text messages first then TALK on the phone. This "social skill" you are talking about is way before cell Phone ever exist. When we were young kids, (age 5 or 7) we don't have cell phones or SMS text messaging. We used to use phone (land) line for God's sake. lol

You'd be surprised at how many people cannot hold a conversation any more. Texting is the way to go for the socially inept.

Simply put for initial text less is more. If he stops texting you give it some hours before sending a response. And if there are extreme gaps in responses call and ask, don't assume he's not into you because he may be genuinely busy with work and may not be able to return you text.

If a new friend or more, I'd say keep it light and short in the beginning. As far as what to call him, I'd start out not using any term that you haven't already used face to face. Don't ask a question where it is inferred you need a quick answer - along the lines of the other suggestions not to expect a reply right away. Also, don't send a subsequent message until you receive a reply to the earlier one. Unless there is a need to reply right away - i.e. arranging a meeting next few minutes, I wouldn't reply immediately. Might come across as too anxious. Also when you reply back to a reply, don't ask directly or indirectly why reply took so long. After you get to know him better, all the rules go out the window and you do what you both know works.

Don't send a text message with just one word or 'lol'. If you cant have enough respect for the person to write a sentence, don't bother sending a message.

I'd rather get a blank text or for that matter ignored than to receive the dreadful 'lol'.

i myself try to use correct spelling and grammar as much as i can. you're not writing in a technical report and i don't expect other people to text like i do. BUT, i hate texts that are like ,"CNT W8 T C U ThErE. LULZ . h8rs gunna h8!"

response time is another issue and depends on the conversation and the person. i carry on day long conversations with some people where the responses are usually every hour or longer. some conversations are more intent and the responses are every few minutes or so. some people i like to text and some people i like to call.
