Allegations of racism and questions about an Israeli town's character

"In the winding stone alleys of this Galilee hill town, a centuries-old center of Jewish mysticism, a campaign is underway.

It is being waged by the town rabbi, Shmuel Eliahu, who along with other area rabbis issued a religious ruling several months ago forbidding residents to rent apartments to Israeli Arab students from the local community college.

The rabbi has warned that the Jewish character of Safed, long revered as sacred, is at risk and that intermarriages could follow if the students mingle with the locals.

Last month, Eliahu called a public meeting to sound the alarm. On the agenda was "the quiet war," a reference to the feared Arab influx, and "fighting assimilation in the holy city of Safed."

Several days later, a building that houses Arab students was attacked by a group of young Jews, and an elderly Holocaust survivor renting a room to students received threats.

To civil rights advocates and other critics, the unsettling developments in this normally quiet community of 32,000 are a window into ugly currents of racism in Israeli society. The events here, the critics say, reflect a general atmosphere of growing intolerance under a government and parliament dominated by parties of the nationalist right.

    .... "

Eliahu Zvieli, an 89-year-old resident of the old city who rents a room to three Arab students, said he had received numerous phone calls and visits, including from Rabbi Eliahu, urging him to remove his tenants. One caller threatened to burn down Zvieli's house, he said. A sign was posted on the gate calling the Arabs' presence "a shameful disgrace."

Zvieli, a Holocaust survivor from Hungary who endured forced-labor and prisoner-of-war camps, said he was not fazed. "I've been through a few things, and I'm handling it," he said. "You can't surrender to terror.

    Also left out:
Arab students, who make up about half of the student population at the school, the Tzfat Academic College.
    Interesting, eh?

Arab students denied the allegations of inappropriate behavior, saying that most stay home on weekends and that those in town were often at work at hotels, replacing Jewish employees who were off Saturdays. Some students noted that they had warm relations with their Jewish landlords, who they said treated them like family.
    Interesting, eh?

He and the other indicted [Jewish] youth were charged with racist incitement, rioting and vandalism.
    Interesting, eh?

The sad reality is that this is a "man-bites-dog story". Throughout the Arab/Muslim world, Jews are routinely subjects of discrimination (in the few places, that is, where there are any Jews left). I dare you to find one instance of an Arab/Muslim government indicting its own Arab/Muslim citizens for "racist incitement", let alone "rioting and vandalism" against Jews - or other minorities.

64% of Israeli teens admit that Arabs don't have equal rights, 50% think they shouldn't, 56% are against allowing Arabs in the Knesset, also half of them don't want to see an arab in their class.

75% of Israeli jews in general are against living in apartment buildings that have Arabs in them, which is not surprising considering that 60% won't let an arab into their homes, 40% think that Israeli Arab's right to vote in the Knesset should be revoked and more than half would refuse to work under an Arab manager/supervisor, 55% would like to see Jew/Arab separation at
    entertainment sites.

man-bites-dog? Hardly, Israel and its youth as you can see are not afraid to be openly racist.

Childish argument. "But HE was mean..."

so that of course justifies threatening a holocaust survivor. icon_rolleyes.gif

Being a victim of crime is not license to become a criminal yourself. There is no element of self defense here in response to a threat - the Israelis are making the threats!

c4, the more I read your justifications and feeble excuses for Israel's actions the more I understand that you guys are the problem. With every post you make you increase sympathy for the Palestinians.

if you can be so relativistic with right and wrong it really shows you have No more moral compass than the kapos who were fine with abuse as long as THEY were the ones administering it.

You have exposed yourself to be everything anti-Semites love to accuse Jews of being.

Well done - your ranting has turned a formerly very pro-Jewish reader firmly into the camp of the people you guys are oppressing. you didn't do it with one emotional outburst post - it took you years of your constant barrage of stupidity to do it.

I wil dispose of my copy of The Chosen and the two Asher Lev books (that I formerly valued very highly.) I am now sorry I ever held up Jewish culture and history as admirable. I took a lot of time to read the history of your people and I was on your side. No longer.

I am now sorry you base an entire culture on retarded "holy towns" in Israel. Even I, a staunch anti-conservative Muslim guy, know that shithole small backwards Muslim towns in the middle of B.F.E. I took no time to realize that this single hasty generalization you made will make me not on your side, but flame you for being the fucking retard that you are.

What would you do if you met a Black on RJ guy you didn't like? Throw away your Thriller album? Luckily for you I know not all of Canada is a giant piece of crap just because you're a little shit.

false equivalency. Not too bright are you?

Tthriller" does not purport to explain or represent black culture, while the writings of Chaim Potok do for Judaism.

Spend less time making your videos and try READING, Jake Benson. Have YOU given the same dedication to undertading other cultures and faiths?

At least I made the effort in the first place to make theJOURNEY from knowing nothing about Judaism to developing a deep appreciation for what The Chosen stood for and theuir incredibly complex history ( in thick volumes, that I read with fascination and frank awe at this warrior tribe.

The actions of Israel betray the high ideals and reflect the basest behaviour of the tribe through its 3,000 year history.

You are apparently unable to apparently grasp the significance of YEARS of reading about another culture, their scriptures and commentaries ( have YOu read them?) (and the commitment that entails) only to have it eroded by continual intransigence.

You also failed to grasp from my post it is not the actions of a small town but the CONSTANT self-justification from Israelis of the unjustifiable that has eroded my respect entirely.
Maybe it is not that that you DON'T read; perhaps you CAN'T READ.

Funny, he had the same effect on me. We played a game a while back of negotiating an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Everytime we got near a resolution, he would renege on points he had agreed upon! He really opened my eyes to see that that is the way it goes on reality!

Completely ridiculous. It was samxr and Ian who said they would abandon the so-called "right of return" - even as in other topics (and later in the same topic) they posted how it's a "right" that can't be given up.

You also violated your own alleged principle, which is that what is Israel's is Israel's and what is Arab Palestine's is Palestine's... only to then give portions of Israel to Palestine and throw a tantrum when I disagreed or requested a concession in return.

All of which is discussed here:

In search of a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict: UNSCR 242, Oslo and Camp David/Taba
(Or: I support the Clinton COMPROMISE parameters. Do you?!)

Isn't it odd how none of the anti-Israel posters came out in support of the Clinton compromise?!

Once again from the depths of the absolutely ridiculous:

Upper Canadian> your ranting has turned a formerly very pro-Jewish reader firmly into the camp of the people you guys are oppressing. you didn't do it with one emotional outburst post - it took you years of your constant barrage of stupidity to do it. I wil dispose of my copy of The Chosen and the two Asher Lev books (that I formerly valued very highly.) I am now sorry I ever held up Jewish culture and history as admirable. I took a lot of time to read the history of your people and I was on your side. No longer.

And that, folks, is the essence of racism. Can you imagine a straight person saying that he used to be pro-gay but for the "ranting" of one gay person that has turned him around?

It's even worse given how UC completely misunderstood what I said, Probably deliberately in order to facilitate his own racist rant.

I pointed out how missing from the propaganda post on RJ was the other half of the story. Not that the perpetrators were right, but that the Arab victims of racism themselves pointed out that this was an exception rather than the rule (the racist-hatists propagandists seize on any and every exception and attempt to smear an entire nation with it) and that the state had arrested and indicted 2 people for "racist incitement, rioting and vandalism."

Again (as I pointed out since it was left out), consider that half of the student population is Arab. If Israel were truly a racist society, they wouldn't even be allowed to study (compare, for example, to Jews in Iran).

The official position of the state of Israel supports the Arab students, and yet the story is being spammed in such a way as to point the finger at Israel. That's why it was posted.

Another interesting thing: how come in almost every pro-Israel (or even neutral) mideast topic there's always someone who barges in and asks "What does this have to do with gay fitness?", and yet we never see this in any of the many more anti-Israel topics.

I think some posters should stop pretending to care about racism half-way around the world and pay more attention to racism right here on RJ.

There is irony in you just repeating your silliness as though repeating an unconvincing argument somehow strengthens it and progresses it.

    QED

how is "allowing" Arab students to be there relevant?

The Russians "allowed" some Jews to live there too, so does that excuse the pogroms that wiped out the rest?

The fact remains you justify or excuse threats to burn out a Holocaust survivor just because they dare to rent apts to Arabs by saying "Arabs are mean to Jews." as though that somehow makes it right.

You have learned nothing from your history other than to pass on a smack to the next one in line.

An unequivocal condemnation of it would be more appropriate than your excuses. I won;t hold my breath though. icon_rolleyes.gif

The situation in and of itself is wrong, but he's putting it in context of a larger picture where you have this little country surrounded by other diametrically opposed countries who are trying to wipe it out. If Canada and Mexico were constantly trying to infiltrate the US with the conscious intention of wiping out American culture, then you bet there'd be more hostility towards them. But anyway, these poor Arabs who got abused, if wrongfully so, should move to Tel Aviv - Jaffo. People are more open-minded there.

Fail. Nowhere did I say that nor was that my pont.

You've only exposed your own racism.

Again, pretending that despite reading volumes about Jews the posts of one Jew (even if what you allege about them was true, and it's not) have made you anti-Jewish is a ridiculous example of racism.

Which has received over $100 BILLION in U.S. military foreign aid, and now has the THIRD largest military AIR FORCE in the world, easily much greater than all of its "enemies" air forces combined.

JAKEBENSON said ... surrounded by other diametrically opposed countries who are trying to wipe it out.

    Really? REALLY??

Is Egypt trying to "wipe out" Israel? Remember, they signed a peace treaty in 1979 which is still in force, 31 years later. Did you forget?

Ditto for Jordan. Did you forget?

So, Israel is not "surrounded" by "diametrically opposed countries" trying to "wipe it out."

Israel is an EXPANSIONIST NATION which has attacked EVERY one of its neighbors, and conquered and occupied some of their territory.

Syria only wants its territory back, the Golan Heights, and is willing to sign a peace treaty for it.

Hezbollah in Lebanon only wants the Shebaa Farms area returned to Lebanon.

BUT ISRAEL PREFERS VIOLENCE AND EXPANSIONISM OVER PEACE.
