Spurred on somewhat by the cry for help today but also by the recent rashes in suicide, I've been pondering why people think their answer is in ending life here in hopes of making all the pain vanish.

Now, I don't want this thread to turn into another argument about the pros and cons of taking a life. So if that is your intention, go play on the freeway for a few hours while the grownups talk.

I'm simply interested in knowing what you think waits for us past this earthly plane, and why we don't consider the downside of what may await us by ending our lives? No liturgical or theological thought from me, just a question.

Gentleman, I invite your intelligent and mature input...the floor is open..Keithicon_cool.gif

Im a Nihilist.. so I just really don't care.
I find it amusing when I tell people that they just look shocked and appalled. Even atheists for the most part.. apparently you can't not have a view on the afterlife or other 'metaphysical' ideals.

I really think I just cease to function. The neurons cease firing, and my conciousness ceases. Nothing after. I won't know because there will be nothing functioning to "know" with. The current just stops flowing. and i become inert organic remains.

I believe life goes on with or without you. Unfortunately most of us will be forgotten without leaving any mark in this world.

My theory is proven by living in many different places and losing/maintaining relationships throughout the years. Relationships are a give/take.

By killing ones self you lose the most important of all; the relationship with yourself.

For some it's one worth losing; I can honestly understand it in some circumstances, and I have empathy.

P.S.> I also think the day I die I will finally be given the answer to the function of the OHCs in the mammalian cochlea.

I used to think the same and it obsessed me at the point I couldn't live properly anymore.

So I stopped thinking about it. And started hoping, instead...

I dont know what exist beyond this world, but I will say I think our life just ends there. I think we are born for only 2 purposes which is to pass our genetic material to the next generation and find happiness while we still live on this earth. I think when we die, we just die, and vanish to an eternal emptiness. I think people like to believe there is an afterlife which I want to believe as well, but its kinda hard to know if there is one or not. Well it doesnt matter what exist beyond the living world to me since I rather be living than dead... I like to believe in reincarnation, but I doubt it at times.

This question is what haunts man throughout centuries, and people die over this due to religion. I think it is better not to think about what exist beyond this world, as long as you lived a happy and fulfilled life things will be ok when you rest in peace.

My theory to what happens when we die is that our essences and our presence remains on the earth and we become one with the earth icon_razz.gif! hahaha sounds kinda hippyish but w/e.

Hmm, funny Im a nihilist too in the sense of.. I think even there is nothing on "this side"... existence is all an illusion

This is 'The Question'. There's not an answer (other than 42... good luck), only the dichotomy of knowledge and belief. I am grateful for what I've enjoyed already, and if that's all there is, then I am a lucky guy. If there is more, then I am exuberant at the thought. Happy to be alive under any circumstances. When I see the wonders of the world I believe there is a place for me after, but I can't know there is... and I get riled up by folks who think they know and therefore judge.

HG Wells said it pretty good. "It is the folly of the simply disciple that demands miraculous frippery upon the majesty of truth, and immaculate conceptions for righteousness."

We should be happy for what we have, and happy at the thought there could be more. If there isn't, we won't be around to consider our situation.

You need to have proof they exist before you ask for them to be falsified.

Ever seen the movie "Defending Your Life" with Albert Finney and Meryl Streep? I think it's something like that.

    There's nothing.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be similar to being sedated when you go into surgery. You're just gone this one moment without ever remembering... except for the waking up afterwards part.

This topic could very well be tilted over into the religious, so I'm saying nothing, though I do have lots of beliefs around what comes next.

Hmmm ya this does touch on religion to be honest and I won't bring my beliefs into conversation except that I personally believe there is life after death. If I'm right, good for me. If I'm wrong, well I'm no worse off than anyone else.
