I am once again finding myself agreeing with SB. While the DREAM Act may have been removed from the Defense Authorization Bill, the bill still deals with whether or not military hospitals will perform abortions. The repeal of DADT is controversial on its own and I think it is even more difficult to pass when it is tied to something else that is controversial.

I still cannot understand WHY they won't separate it from the Defense Bill and hold a vote on DADT on its own?????? If it fails because the dems insist on it being wrapped within the defense bill, then they only have themselves to blame if the repeal doesn't pass. I still think IF they separate it, DADT will be repealed.

‘Don’t Know, Don’t Care’ — 70% of U.S. military surveyed unfazed by repeal of DADT

    [quote]
69 percent of those responding reported that they had served with someone in their unit who they believed to be gay or lesbian, and of those who did, 92 percent stated that their unit’s ability to work together was very good, good, or neither good nor poor.

    U. S. combat units reported similar results with 89 percent of Army units and 84 percent of Marine units saying they had good or neutral experiences working with gay and lesbian servicemembers.

Concurrently, the report found that 30 percent of those surveyed overall & between 40 and 60 percent of the Marine Corps either expressed concern or predicted a negative reactions if the current “don’t ask, don’t tell” law, was repealed by Congress.

The Pentagon working group concluded that repeal could bring about some limited and isolated disruptions immediately after implementation, however the report’s author’s expressed confidence that the Defense Department and the military establishment would be able to adjust and accommodate changes over the long term.

    SouthBeach150:

"It only takes 20 or 30 minutes to vote. And Harry (and the Democrats) control the schedule of what gets debated and voted on, so why not set aside 3 or 4 hours of "precious" Senate time and do a vote on JUST the repeal of DADT?"

B/c Senate REPUBLICANS would bog the process down with endless amendments (they have already promised to do this) in a (likely successful) attempt to derail repeal. This is assuming a straight repeal even has the needed 60 votes in the first palce, which it might not thanks to republicans and blue dog dem senators. That dosen't even factor in Grand Hypocrite McCain's promise to filibuster unless a whole host of "when-pigs-fly" conditions are met.

You guys should take some time to educate yourself on Senate procedure before youstart blaming democrats for not acting on this. They know they'd run into a wall b/c republicans have instituted a 60-vote threshold to do fucking anything short of turning the chamber lights on. Granted, it IS the Democrats' fault for not passing filibuster reform when they had the chance. The word "filibuster' exists nowhere in the US Constituion and is simpy an invented measure where a tiny minority can obstruct the will of the ultra majority, like on DADT repeal. I've seen polls where DADT repeal is favored by just under 80% of Americans, yet petty Senate republicans will block it just to deny Harry Reid a "political victory" ( Mitch McConnell's own words - not mine). Apparently simply allowing gay people the opportunity to get shot at without having to lie about themselves is a political game to the modern-day republican senator. Sick fucks.

Senate republicans have done more to stop this country from moving forward over the past two years with the filibuster then the fucking Taliban has.

First of all, I think Obama is making a big mistake for fighting the judges ruling that DADT has not merit and is unconstitutional. Now on regards to the fact that the repeal of DADT is part of the defense bill is for the pure fact that republicans will always pass a defense spending bill. However, the democrats are also trying to push other extreme measures in the bill that have nothing to do with the military. This is based on the fact that republicans will vote it down and look like the bad guys when the democrats won't stand up for the soul purpose of just repealing DADT. Democrats need to focus only on the repeal of DADT in the defense bill and stop adding other amendments that have nothing to do with military and our countries defense!!!!

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>By saying this CuriousJ are you actually ignorning the documented fact that never in the history of the Senate has the opposition party blocked more legislation through the Filibuster, never before has there been more appointments blocked, never have such statements been made such as McConnell, My number one job is to make Obama a one term President, never have we had such announcements as Demint calling for Obama's Waterloo, You cannot show anything but blocking coming from the last two years senators actions. Prove otherwise !!! Too many blocking records have been broken showing the republicans guilty as accused and labeled for what they are, the party of no. so bite the bullet and accept responsibility for the people you back !!! How do you like them now ??
