Are there any chill places to hang out in Miami?

I'm moving to Miami beginning of next year for a little while for school, and wanted to find some things to do on my down time. Also, it'll be cool to meet some gay people since it's the first big city I've been to in years. But, I'm NOT into one-night stands, or places where people are highly judgmental(like a gay beach where people judge your body 100%). I know big cities are good to meet people of different personalities, and hopefully a normal, laid-back group of people exist, but finding it would be hard.

Any suggestions? Basically, I'm not into the "hottest club" out there, but a place where you can have conversations and hang out and do fun activities. I guess a sports bar since you can watch games, and play games, and actually talk and hear the person, since I have a low voice compared to loud and obnoxious.

Lincoln Road is an outdoor shopping street on South Beach and is great for people watching. I bet some guys that live there can give you some ideas. I love visiting Miami and can't imagine running out of things to do down there. And if you do, Ft. Lauderdale is close by! icon_wink.gif

Well, South Beach is notorious for being body-conscious but I don't think Miami is that way. However, even in South Beach, it's not as bad as the stereotype. I live in South Beach and go to the gay beach all the time and the adonises are still in the minority. The vast majority of the guys are average at best. I really don't think you have much to worry about. All the really hot guys here are strippers and escorts. Nobody pays them much mind unless they have lots of money. So, in your everyday life, you're not going to feel out of place. South Beach is the most pretentious part of Miami and even that isn't that pretentious in my opinion. Don't let it intimidate you. Just come here, feel welcomed, and do your thing. And if there is anything I can do to help you in your transition, just ask.

Anyway, I'm sorry I can't answer your question. It sounds like you'll be living in Miami, not Miami Beach, and I really don't know many things about Miami.

On a side-note peripheral to the conversation, isn't it interesting that Miami's reputation is so much larger than its population. I thought it was HUGE, then I finally found out it was only the 42nd largest city in the US I was like WTF! Jacksonville, the largest city in Florida, and the 13th largest city in the US is hardly known about compared to Miami.

    Welcome to Mi-Jammy Mon icon_cool.gif

Not sure what you're really aiming for
but like someone said before Lincoln rd has some great places
to sit have a drink or meet friends for dinner
    or just sit and talk
If you wanna hang with friends and actually hear them try MOVA
it's a nice little upscale gay bar
The gay beach is great esp on the weekend
and The Palace Bar has some fun shows that spill out onto the street layer in the day

Yes - definitely check out the Palace Bar on Ocean Drive.

Actually, they have a pretty decent breakfast too!

As does the Front Porch, the restaurant at the Penguin Hotel.

    Downtown Hollywood, and Hollywood Beach
Neither are the hardcore club atmosphere; and both are awesome to just chill.
In fact, I'm about to walk to downtown Hollywood in just a few minutes for a couple martinis, then come back home and go to bed...it's a 10 minute walk for me. icon_wink.gif

Update: Ok it wasn't just a couple...the bartender was hot and gay (and it wasn't a gay bar).
    I love Hollywood. icon_biggrin.gif

Bumping this to ask about the gay bars/clubs around Miami Beach

I'm just curious if people know what's a good one and which ones to stay away from.

I went to one yesterday, and while it wasn't horrible, I went by myself, so I found most of the guys were in a pair or groups of friends. Plus, about 2/3 of the guys looked super attracted or were very muscular so I felt highly intimidated. I was kinda disappointed that noone came up to me and said hi, I dunno if I went to a wrong place or I did something wrong :/
