I recently had a very, very bad cold virus. I seem to be over the worst of it, but I still get very tired in the evenings. I was in bed for almost 5 days with it.

It's been three since my first sick day. Is it OK to go back to exercising? Should I gradually build up to my usual levels of exercise?

Listen to your body. If it says no, even when your doctors say yes, then it's a no. I had that nasty virus thing too and when I was over the worst of it and knew I wasn't contagious, I lifted lighter and didn't stay as long until I knew I was ready to go for the maximum again.

I feel much better for having taken the time for my body, eventhough I was annoyed that I had an interruption in my workout schedule.

Some time off won't hurt you. And sometimes when you start back you'll even be stronger, so don't worry too much about it. Get better first, even if it takes another week or two. You'll know when it's time. In the mean time eat healthy and finish out any medicine the doctor gave you.
    Get better

I got that flu, which first put me on the couch for 5 days and not able to get up, then was like the walking dead for a few weeks. Just got back to the gym this week after a month. It feels great, but it takes a while to get back in the swing of things. Listen to your body.

Yeah, just ease back into things. The rest in the meantime will do you good. Eat well as soon as you can. I got a real bad food poisoning once and lost about 10 pounds. I was only recently (several years later) able to surpass where I was muscle and weight-wise. Ever since then I was paranoid of taking too much time off after being sick.

But just a few days ago I had a bad bladder infection or something and was in bed and feverish for about 3 days. Now a week later I am going back to the gym well rested and the same weight as before. I feel great!

Just concentrate on getting better and feeling good. I find that vitamin C and Beta-carotene along with good food help me recover from infections quicker. Cranberry pills helped in this case too.

Get better guys!! Hang in there JDB!! You still have your youth and good looks! time is on your side!

I just got over a good bout of the flu
... like someone said listen to your body
if you don't feel up to it don't force yourself

also out of concern for other guys don't go if you're sneezing or coughing
that will just spread the germs more

I was just sick and missed the gym for 7 days.

Take it easy the first few times back - your body is out of the routine.

I did some mini workouts at home after I was over the worst of it just to see where I was at before going back to the gym.

Thanks for the tips, guys. That virus really knocked me for six. It's been three weeks to the day that I became really ill with it.

I did 200 calories on my exercise bike today and that was enough for my body!

    Thanks again.

I feel you on the being sick. I have been sick for 8 or 9 days, and on Wednesday tested positive for mono. It's really kicking me in the ass. I tried to work out on Tuesday and lasted an hour, but was lightheaded at the end, and went to the doc the next day, who said no exercise for 10 days at least if I am symptom-free by then.

It's tough on the mind of an athlete; I have gotten in 2 hours of exercise in 11 days. I'm going batsh*t.

Any recommendations from those of you who have had mono on getting better?

Today is my first day back at work- I was in bed from last Monday through Friday with the flu. I want to attempt going back to the gym tonight, so I'll see how it goes. So disappointing too, because I was making such great and noticeable gains and feel like I lost momentum.

yalemarine, you will be OK when you get back to the gym and your momentum will come back easily.

It was a bit of struggle for me in the last day or two, but once you get over that "barrier" you're fine.
