This is primarily directed to our American audience...but everyone is invited to participate.
    Here's the scenario:
You are the President of the U.S., for just one moment in time. You have been given the authority to pass a law or in some way, invoke just ONE change...without any requirements that it be voted upon, sent to Congress...or any interference from any government agency...

Responses are limited to one..and ONLY ONE change. No party affiliation is needed...nor should be part of this topic.

What would you change? What ONE thing would you do that would better the current condition of this country and it's inhabitants?

I'd repeal all laws against homosexuality. That would include allowing gay marriage, and lift DADT, all in one swoop. icon_wink.gif

Edit: And it would also allow for gays to be protected under the same anti-discrimination laws as any other minority.

put X number of dollars into feeding the school kids.

And by X number I mean it depends on the financial situation. But like effectively remove tons of funding form the military, and put it to feeding kids.

I would destroy the government! Anarchy! Take out the constitution! People should govern themselves and should know whats right and wrong icon_razz.gif! I like how they lived during the dark ages with no government. Everyone ruled themselves and knew what was good from bad. Government complicates everything in life, I dont think human beings needs to be controlled or told what to do since its not a natural thing in nature. Were not wild savages...

Although I think we all can agree that this would be a wonderful event...BUT, I'm thinking of something that will benefit ALL men, women and children of this dilapidated country.

Although compassion seems to have gone out of style, I would guarantee that everyone has access to affordable health care. That may mean scrapping the new health care plan as I am not confident it will cover everyone with something they can afford, but also not just scrap it and do the Republican thing of doing nothing but going back to the failing system we have had for so many years.

I would make it so that anything made outside the US and imported costs more than a US made item.

Double would be a nice round number!!! Having worked in the International Trade business for years.... I can honestly say that, in MY opinion, our current stance on world trade has and WILL be our final downfall!!!

    That would benefit everyone.
-No longer would employers be firing their best workers.
-No longer would the military be discharging its best soldiers.
-No longer would parents be worried that their child might be 4x more likely to commit suicide.
-No longer would marriages be broken after several years because one of them came out of the closet...instead, they'd be able to be open about it BEFORE marriage to the opposite gender.
-No longer would gays have to move back in with their parents because they got fired/evicted/home loan denied/etc.
-No longer would gays be banned from giving blood.
-No longer would gay bars be confined to the shittiest and more dangerous sections of towns (especially the less populated towns).
-No longer would families need to live in fear of "some gay man" attempting to rape their child, because they'd be better informed.

Really, ending legal discrimination against gays would end a whole lot of this country's problems.

I think it would be better for Americans to not fill their houses and lives with cheap things they don't need made at the cost of the lives and environment of a developing country.

Why I'm explaining that to someone who just likes to call names instead of explaining why he disagrees is beyond me, though.

First choice: Lift the salary cap on social security contributions. Millionaires should have to pay their 7.65% (or whatever it is) on every penny of their income. They sure ain't helping the disabled and elderly out of their own pockets.

Second choice: make sure every member of Congress gets x-rayed or sexually assaulted - excuse me, I mean "patted down" - every time they fly. Seeing John Boener bypass the security lines just tweaked my nipples (and not in a good way). Members of Congress should be compelled to live with the consequences of any law they pass.

Bit of a rant on both counts - but thanks for listening!

1st choice: pull our troops out of all the wars we are fighting in from all around the world and have them here at home patrolling, securing, and protecting our borders here at home.

(of course there would be exceptions--e.g. to assist with the U.N., security for peace missions or foreign embassies to name a few.)

2nd choice: tax the churches. why should they be using tax-free dollars to pay-off sex-abuse victims? and what better way to help pay down the national debt.

Wow, communist much? (yes... namecalling... I'm aware of that)

So I think "people" (not just "Americans") should spend their incomes on exactly the things they want. Like it's up to you what John Doe does and does not "need". That's the free market you know.

And buying stuff at the cost of the environment of a developing country? I think that many of those emerging markets with double digit GDP growth achieve that because the West has millions of wealthy consumers who buy their stuff. What it does to the environment isn't relevant for you or anybody else, they have to rule their own countries.

Looking at the average American oil company, or the amount of garbage produced per capita, and the petrol consumption per capita, it seems like theres plenty of environmental gains to be made at home. So not sure why you are entitled to tell other countries how to manage their environmental issues.

And then, how you relate these two "points" to economic protectionism is completely beyond me... So if you put extra tariffs on imported goods from developing countries, don't you think they will take a hike with the existing environmental regulations to push down on cost, in order to still reach the US market at a competitive price?
