Wow, it's one of my LEAST favorite holidays. Excessive drinking and homophobia, all wrapped up in one horrendous self-pitying/aggrandizing god-awful day set to bagpipes...
wait, where is the emoticon for shootingg oneself in the head? well... jeez, realjock, how is a gay new yorker supposed to express himself on an embarrassing religious/cultural holiday?icon_question.gif

My family is Irish and I feel no sense of pride or community when it comes to the St. Patty's day drunkfest. To me it's just and excuse to drink large quantities of green beer, puke it up later in the evening and then resist the urge to look in the toilet the next day. Then there are the parades organized by people who pretty much want me and every other homo of Irish descent dead for daring to bring shame to them through our orientation.....

I pretty much dislike all the drunk holidays. Cinco de Mayo, Mardi Gras, New Years, they all suck. The 4th of July can get kinda scary too. I will admit my perceptions may be a little bit colored by the riots with fatality shootings and beatings we had in Seattle one year on several those holidays. It might have been spread out over two years, but I probably still have brain damage from getting tear gassed and trampled during the WTO.icon_lol.gif

I used to bartend on Riverstreet in Savannah, Ga on St. Pattys Day. I made good money but people were a mess. Oh, it was amusing to see the city dye all the water fountains green as well as the Savannah River itself. It was a sight to behold.

Back in the 80's (yeah, i'm kinda old) the St Patrick's day parade down 5th avenue in NYC, officially banned gay-irish groups, leading to protests, lawsuits, and eventually a supreme court decision in favor of the parade committee. the ban on gay groups is still in effect. hence, the bad taste of institutionalized homophobia that goes hand in hand with st patricks day for me.icon_sad.gif
