Ok so I've been doing Martial Arts for about 3 months and I'm still having some difficulty with my front kick. Instead of the ball of my foot hitting the shield my toes typically end up crunched and taking most of the impact. I've been told to try to curl my toes toward my body to help but it doesn't seem to be helping. I was wondering if any martial artist out there had some advice. Thank you

Try to PUSH the target with your foot instead of kicking it. If that doesn't work, you're probably kicking too low. (No matter how far your curl your toes back, you'll still hit them if you're not kicking high enough)

correct. curling back helps but cannot be instituted properly.

You could try lifting your knee up first, then lift your lower leg with your toes back and push your foot forward like you are pushing something away from you. The important thing is to avoid flicking your foot up, you should be able to stop at any point of your kick and not throw yourself off balance.

    Practice this:

    kick the ground.

stand up, raise one leg, point your foot directly down, pull the toes back and tap the ground with the ball of your foot. this way you'll get the feeling of making contact with a hard surface with your foot in the correct position. once you've done that a few hundred times, bring your foot up (maintaining the toe position) and perform the front kick. It's also a great way of working on the ankle flexion/extension in the kick too.

I get children in class to do that as part of warm up, and I personally do it myself. In fact, I know it's a bad habit of mine in that I do it subconsciously when I'm thinking (and walking around bare foot).

don't forget though, most marial arts will stress different aspects of a front kick; they ain't all the same.

check out that clip above, then watch a Korean practitioner in Tae Kwon Do vs Soo Bahk Do (Tang Soo Do), etc ... all quite different.

none better or worse than the other; just different.

What kind of Martial Arts are you doing?
Different Martial Arts have different methods of kicking.
I'm guessing you are doing a more of a straight leg kick. If that is the case I suggest you work on your aim it seems to be of a little. Aim higher/lift higher.
I really can't comprehend this... You lift your leg and extend it should come out flat against the object. Now all you have to do is point your toes when you are doing it and it comes out heel on the object. Unless, of course you are cutting up at an angle instead of lifting straight up and extending.
