Wow, ABC is really doing some great work on their "What Would You Do?" program. First it was gay guys in a bar and how others would react, then gay couples in a restaurant with a child and how others would react, then gay bullying and how others would react. This coming (TONIGHT) Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, they will air a segment where parents publicly badger their sons and daughters for being gay. Can't wait to see this!

I'm not sure I could stomach it. Seeing that kind of gay hatred, directed against children, by their own parents, would disturb me too much.

I know it exists, I contribute money to agencies that take these kids in when their homophobic right-wing Christian families throw them out on the street. But I don't know if I could see it actually happening.

It's like car crashes. I know they happen, so I fasten my seat belt in consequence and drive defensively, but I don't wish to see the mangled dead bodies at a crash scene.

oh god... i remember that happening to me, only it wasnt on national television. those ppl should have their kids taken away and be publically humiliated on an ABC segment for being too retarded to raise a child

I can see multiple ways of looking at this. I believe that viewing this could be really difficult for some guys who have gone through this sort of rejection by parents. On the other hand, having it dramatized may bring home the realities of some gay men's lives to lots of people who don't imagine what it would be like.

Just a reminder to watch or set your DVRs for the "What Would You Do?" episode tomorrow night (Friday). I imagine this will make a lot of parents think about how they may confront (or are currently confronting) their kids on this issue.

i watch that show once in a while. interesting stuff. But to be honest I don't think many people are going to interject themselves into the argument since it's the parent and their son/daughter. People are just going to mind their own business, i think. Unless the parents begin to physically abuse him/her. We'll have to watch and see though. Thanks for the post.

Not necessarily, a few months ago there was another episode on Polygamy and one of the actors was posing as a 16 year old girl who was about to marry into a mormon family as the older mans fourth, of fifth wife. The girl cried and said out loud I dont want to get married etc.. It was surprising to me how outspoken the other patrons were in the resturaunt, one woman even threatened to call the police on the family and attempted to remove the girl from the dinner table... it was great.

OP: Thanks alot for the heads up, I love this show and think of it as a real eye opener. I could never be the person to stand by while someone is mistreated and I know it to be unfair, so its really interesting to me to see this other side of people when confronted with real life situations.

Art Deco, I myself have seen left wing atheist reject gay and bisexual children too; it's not a one way street.

You also need to go and look in the mirror, and I'm sure you will see a trial of destruction behind you, in your days as a heterosexual breeding male.

Just because you may well now be in a gay relationship, still does not make you one of us, or erase the damage you did as a democratic breeding heterosexual.

Sorry but it's not a one way street, and not all the abuse and neglect belong to conservative Christians.

I would love to see the respect you now get off your children, and ex wives, now you live your life as a bisexual man, and the damage you may well of inflected on them.

But......then I myself have lived my whole life as a homosexual, as I have had no other choice, thus been a witness to many things. I also come out when it was not safe to do so, as your generation had done squat, for younger generations advancement, yet you benifit from our stance.

What I saw was sort of disturbing. They wanted to know if people would get involved when this kid is coming out to his dad and it's not going well. Most people seemed to just feel uncomfortable and leave or say you shouldn't discuss this in public. It was just awkward.

I thought it was brilliant. The one lady sooo deserved that standing ovation!!!

I find myself wondering what some of us more proficient (for lack of a better word) would do if we observed a similar situation.
