What's your taste in music and does it reflect your personality?

Just wanted to do a mini experiment because I strongly believe a person's personality can be reflected in a lot of different ways such as musical tastes, fashion style, body language etc. I also believe that a person's habits reflect how they think as a person and to a degree their personality e.g. how tidy their desk is at work, what types of food they like to eat, how they eat their food, if they're a smoker or not etc.

SO without further ado, please state your favorite music genre (the one that tugs at your heartstrings the most) and briefly describe your personality. See if you can find a link between your music genre and your personality icon_smile.gif

    I'll start.

My favorite genre is soulful acoustic music -- like Brian Mcknight, Destiny's Child, Justin Nozuka, Alicia Keys. I prefer when artists play and sing their own music because it's more organic. Personality wise, I am very sensitive towards other people's emotions and am naturally an emotional person. I feel this has a connection to soulful music because the music touches my heart and it is able to elicit very particular and subtle tones of emotions from within me.

P.S. Wow I actually found that really difficult to answer (especially at 3:30am!). Anyone else want to have a go?

My music is deep house, Detroit Techno, 80's new wave, electronica, DreamPop, 4AD, Brit Pop, Shoegaze, and Industrial. I don't know what it says about my personality- cold, heartless, and artificial maybe?

Indie, darker stuff, inspiring, different, instrumental, international... NOTHING that starts with Justin, Kesha, Katy, Britney, etc.

    Yeah, we match each other.

    I rarely listen to music.
I like Roy Orbison, certain country music (not "country rock"), very early Frank Sinatra...
And, my personality is, "Cranky Old Lady."

I mainly listen to metal covers of pop songs. I've definitely got more of a pop personality than the stereotypical metalhead doom-and-gloom-I-hate-the-world outlook though.

Hmmmm.....I like a wide range of music: Trance/club mixes, 70's, 80's, current popular music.

No idea what that makes me.....diverse, I suppose!

My type of music is glitch, IDM, minimal, experimental electronic, mostly instrumental. I used to listen to and still love brit pop. To me, British music is superior. My roots are late 70s/early 80s post punk. I also like classical (Bach). I believe my personality is consistent with my tastes in music and art. You could probably sense it but I cannot describe my personality in a few words. I listen mostly to music with no words.

Lots of late classical, 20th century, and just a tad of the performance artists (M.Monk, Anderson, etc...) However I listen to tons of pop/alternative from the 90s, and Baez, Mitchell, Merchant are my girls.

My personality would best be described...

I love soundtrack music from video games i.e Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Xenosaga, Zelda etc

    Orchestra music

    electronica music

Honestly I usually listen to anything that sounds good to my ears because I'm a moody fella at times.

If music is reflective of our personality, than you must have the best personality on RJ.

Thanks Heartrobb. I'm so flattered. But I guess there's no such thing as the best or the worst personality.

There are so many types of music that I can enjoy. I like jazz and in particular, Keith Jarrett. I like top 40 pop music from 1960-1967. I loved the pop music of the 80s in particular, the alternative/dance music and much of the music played at the SAINT at that time. I like the alternative/modern pop of the early 90s. Of today's music, I continue to love jazz and also sometimes classical. For dance music, I like trance and techno and Erasure is also a favorite.

I like the extremes of indie-pop and schlager, with lots of italodisco, Hi-NRG and 90s dance in the middle.

    I'm a Gemini.

well i'm not very sure you can say what exactly your personality reflects by the type of music you listen to... music is music after all...

me? i mainly listen to underground rock bands that not a lot of people would have heard of.

personally i can not stand pop music, house music and trance. probably the key reason i'm not into the gay scene!

fair enough, i have heard people describe rock/punk as aggressive music, and i guess a lot of it is aggressive sounding, but that doesn't mean i'm aggressive!

thinking about this actually makes me wonder how successfull a gay club night would be where only rock music is played. there sure as hell ain't any such night at london gay clubs, sadly.

Um, I based my theory off of the fact that I perceived people who were more into pop and dance music were generally more extroverted and people who enjoyed hard rock tended to be more introverted. I then thought that music may potentially reveal more about ourselves because of what we enjoy within it.

That's what I was thinking anyway but it's all open for debate.

There's a great bar a block away from my apartment, the Phoenix, that plays the type of music you describe. It has one of the best juke boxes and you don't hear any pop music there at all.

As for me, the music I listen to depends on my mood. When I'm working out, I need faster/louder music to keep me motivated - so it's usually dance music or rock with a fast beat. When I'm walking down the street or riding on the train I like rock music from the '60s and '70s. At home, I often listen to vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald. When I'm reading, I like stuff that doesn't have lyrics, like classical and jazz.

I will also get obsessed by a certain artist or group and listen to a lot of their music. On a recent flight I saw the documentary about the Doors so I've been listening to a ton of their music. When Patti Smith's autobiography came out, I went to her reading/performance, got my book signed, and then listened to her non-stop for a while.

I'm also starting to listen to more international performers, especially music in Spanish.

There's certain artists I can always listen to and never tire of, especially the Velvet Underground, the Beatles, and the Pretenders.

I'm not sure what my music taste says about me, but I try to find the passion within the music. I prefer stuff that isn't overproduced and has a certain raw element to it (except for Kylie Minogue, whom I love) or a certain level of playfulness - which can be found in Mozart or the B-52s. I also appreciate artists who can perform live and still sound as good if not better as they did in the studio.

I listen to more dance, house, electronica, downtempo, chillout, lounge, aome trance, club type. I don't listen much to the radio so I am not up to speed on the last played out songs. When I workout I do put on some more high paced music to push myself...hyper eurobeat, acid jazz, gabah, jungle, NRG, and Dub Step.

Favorite artist would be: Ministry Of Sound, Hed Kandi, House Sexy, Dance Dance Revolution soundtrack, Beatmania soundtrack, Alicia Keys, Basment Jaxx, Girl Talk, etc. I would say that I am a very calm person who has a big heart to care for complete strangers. I am very positive minded and steer clear from anything that sounds very negative. I would say that its somewhat true but to an extent. I listen to a little bit of rap but I am not some total thug into that scene per say.
