from a commentor on Joe.My.God's blog about this "Hardball" segment:
"According to Perkins "86% of pedophiles claimed to be Gay/bi Males" Total BS! According to FBI statistics show a complete opposite figure that the greater majority of Child rapists/pedohiles are in fact Heterosexual! Additionally, some conservative groups have argued that scientific research strongly supports their claims that homosexuality and pedophilia are linked. The Family Research Council has produced what is perhaps the most extensive attempt to document this claim. It is an article by Timothy J. Dailey titled Homosexuality and Child Abuse.
With 76 footnotes, many of them referring to papers in scientific journals, it appears at first glance to be a thorough and scholarly discussion of the issue. On further examination, however, its central argument – that "the evidence indicates that homosexual men molest boys at rates grossly disproportionate to the rates at which heterosexual men molest girls" – doesn't hold up.
In summary, the scientific sources cited by the FRC report do not support their argument. Most of the studies they referenced did not even assess the sexual orientation of abusers. Two studies explicitly concluded that sexual orientation and child molestation are unrelated. Notably, the FRC failed to cite the 1978 study by Groth and Birnbaum, which also contradicted their argument. Only one study (Erickson et al., 198
might be interpreted as supporting the FRC argument, and it failed to detail its measurement procedures and did not differentiate bisexual from homosexual offenders.
The empirical research does not show that gay or bisexual men are any more likely than heterosexual men to molest children. This is not to argue that homosexual and bisexual men never molest children. But there is no scientific basis for asserting that they are more likely than heterosexual men to do so. And, as explained above, many child molesters cannot be characterized as having an adult sexual orientation at all; they are fixated on children."
"Actually Dailey did initially cite the Groth study. But Groth wrote to Dailey asking that he take his research out because it was being distorted. I cited the letter in a piece I wrote - http://holybulliesandheadlessmonsters.blogspot.com/2010/04/family-research-council-accuses-gays-of.html
Any objective person who has read Groth's groundbreaking publication 'male victimss of same-sex abuse' would disagree that he holds a personal opinion supporting the idea that homosexuals perpetrators are the majority of offenders.
"Most of the research findings they quote are outdated by decades. They quote findings that were biased to support the old ideas about reparative therapy which have been discredited."
The fact that Tony Perkins wasn't called out on his bogus stats pisses me off. For those misinformed audience members, they will now assume Tony Perkins was making valid points. And more people will walk away with twisted ideas about gay people.
And then there's TP's misleading reference to the bogus group, "American College of Pediatricians" (all anti-gay and with George Rekers of luggage-lifter fame formerly on its board) instead of the legitimate real medical group, the "American Academy of Pediatrics"
Not called out on any of these -- that's the trouble with this kind of limited discussion "interview" show with limited knowledge hosts and talk-over tactics.
