    so many

I never really was all that impressed by Mildred Pierce

Possessed and the Damned Dont Cry maybe her best acting IMO

Harriet Craig and Queen Bee...Joan at her bitchiest

    Humoresque...Joan at her most vulnerable

Straightjacked and Beserk...Joan at her campiest

    Johnny Guitar...Joan being Joan

So many great roles by Joan its too bad that nasty little brat Christina made people forget what wonder work she did

i had never viewed a JC movie until after fay dunnaway did her brauva perfomance of JC in "mommie dearest".

after that, i started watching her movies when they were on the tube to see what the heck everyone was exclaiming over.

my college roommate had a JC/faye dunnaway t-shirt with an enraged faye dunnaway/JC drag queen holding up a wire coat hanger. the caption was "I NEVER TOUCHED THOSE KIDS!"

Too many to choose from but Queen Bee has to be near the top o the list. Never airs much though like Mildred Pierce does. Of course that one is great too because it has Eve Arden in it.

An interesting movie, in which not a single man is seen, though talked about. Not surprisingly, directed by George Cukor, who provided the social center of the gay A-list in Hollywood in the 1930s, and was renowned as a "womens director."

On the other hand, for high-camp Crawford there's Johnny Guitar from 1954, when she had morphed into a kind of tough lesbian look, but with lipstick.

Of course not, j/k, possibly ranking with her later bomb Trog in 1970. Though Johnny Guitar is a kind of cult classic for it's silly awfulness.

If you havent see Harriet Craig try to find it, I think its just on vhs not on dvd but she plays a variation of Queen Bee with an ultra short hairstyle. If you think she is controlling in QB, watch her in this one.

As for Baby Jane, yes its a great camp movie but for me Joan is relegated to the sidelines in this one with Bette Davis having all the good juicy lines. The off screen feud to me is what makes the movie.

Jonny Guitar...Joan as Vienna. Yes she looks like a lesbian but boy does she sling the lines back to that pig Mercedes McCambridge. I just love the versatile roles Joan took on. Even in Beserk and Straightjacket she was really give it her all despite how insane some of the lines were

    My favorite scene from Straightjacket

i've tried a couple of times to view this one but found it mentally exhausting.

the copies i viewed had muddy, atonal soundtracks; trying to follow the witty, rapid paced dialog wore me out.

Gotta love Mildred Pierce....how anyone could put up with so much drama is beyond me (losing her marriage, losing her business and then knowing that her daughter is going off to prison).

Then there's another film that stars Hope Lange as a young college educated woman seeking her place in the world. Joan plays an editor for a publisher I think and boy is she a Bitch Queen!! I can't think of the film though...

I'll go with Mildred Pierce. I've only seen her performance in that movie, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, and Grand Hotel. Haven't seen The Women in its entirety.

Now when do we dedicate a thread to Barbara Stanwyck? icon_biggrin.gif
