hey, hey, hey. Stop picking on the French Military. If it wasn't for them we never would have won independence from Britain and we would still be speaking English to date!

The Serbs aren't doing anything helpful to their cause. Yeah, they burned some UN NTV's so what. The frogs are getting hurt because they let people do this to them. The minute the Serbs see American KFOR they will know to stop fucking around.

this is all very funny, coming from a culture that isn't even as old as one of the several dynasties that have ruled france. we're the uppity know-it-all teenager telling adults what life is like. criticizing other countries with far more ebbs and flows than we have had as a culture is juvenile and oddly redneck.

    vive la france!

    ps
i'd also point out that if it weren't for france there wouldn't be a united states. all this "we saved france twice" isn't the point - they helped us, and until this current american regime they were one of our most important allies. there's a reason the two statues of liberty face each other across the atlantic - they're our friends, or at least they were. we'd be lucky to have such a refined friend again one day.

    pps
korea, vietnam, iran/contras, iraq part 1, pakistan, afghanistan, iraq part 2... what makes you think they don't have a reason or 10 to tell some jokes about us?

I love the French. Sure, they can be snotty, and they don't really like us, but they don't really much like the English, the Germans, the Spaniards, the Italians, the Russians, the Monagasques, the Moroccans, the Chinese, the Canadians, or people from the other 174 member countries of the U.N. Hell, they don't even like each OTHER much.

It's all refreshingly democratic. Vive l'égalité!

People seem to forget that the US has survived as a nation for over 200 years (1776)

There has been culture here for just as long as people have lived in Europe. Most European nations on the other hand have a history of unstable rulers and changing monarchies. The US has been existed longer in it's present state than all of the major European nations.

Actually, I think it is the way the allies carved up the old empires in 1919 that has laid the basis for today's troubles.

    Good book: Paris 1919

But I like what British PM Lloyd George said when he got back to Britain:

"I did the best I could considering that I was sitting between Jesus Christ and Napoleon"

Jesus Christ = US Pres W. Wilson
    Napoleon = French PM Clemenseau

Hey, Native American's had their own culture icon_wink.gif

Just because they had tents and you had castles doesn't make them less civilized.

trance, you're very cute and very nice, but your historical arguments are getting weaker and weaker in this discussion. patriotism is one thing, but you're purposefully being silly now.

no one is arguing whether or not the native americans were civilized, but culturally they were not organized socially or technologically to the same degree (no, not even the aztecs, incas, etc.). it doesn't mean they were uncivilized, because they wre VERY civilized (and is some respects moreso than the europeans), but that's not the point.

you're trying to make an argument that the united states as a nation is just as developed as those cultures of the old world, and we're simply not there yet. all we've got is money and muscle, but very little long term staying power yet. we've had an unprecedented and amazing 230 years, and we're not going anywhere anytime soon, but rome ruled the mediterranean world for way longer than that without the benefit of email and remote operated attack jets. france has had a national identity since at least the 15th century because of joan of arc/hundred years war, and it's slightly ridiculous for you to imply that the stars and stripes are better just because they are.

cultures go through ups and downs. we're in a process of receding after a few decades of total domination. that's nothing. and it kinda contradicts your point about long term stability in this country versus the instability in other places. the chinese have existed as a nation/empire in various formats for over 3,000 years, uninterrupted.

no one is saying the usa isn't a great nation, but it's a tad silly for us to make fun of france or any other collective culture that measures it's history in centuries/millenia rather than decades/centuries. france, over the course of its history, has been the dominant culture in europe at least 4 separate times. respect for one's elders is endearing.

No one is making fun of France's cultural achievements....it's her military achievements that we are making fun of....esp her recent propensity to surrender.

But take it easy...it's just a joke.

it really is a different viewpoint depending on what side of the pond you are on trust me! icon_lol.gif

I dont deny that the halcyon days of the English empire have long gone, but I dont agree there has been a US empire. Their may have been a corporate dominance but that is coming to pass too and one could argue that in the terms of history if their was a dominance then it was a very short lived one at that.

should have been wars, the break up of the former Napoleonic empire as you allude to above and the formation in the second world war of Democratic Federal Yugoslavia and the problems that the formation of Israel has bought to the world

Gee, I remember for the last ten years the ruling capitalists in Washington and Wall Street were gloating over the moribund French economy and urging the French and other Europeans to "be more like us." Well, once again unregulated, profit-mad, cost-benefit analyzing capitalism has screwed the rest of us and plunged the country into the worst economic mess since the Depression. Funny, now the dollar is worth less than 2/3 of the Euro.

Ever catch the news or read a newspaper? Remember how it is French troops who are always rescuing Americans' butts when the latest beserkness breaks out in Africa?
