I have read/heard several times now that 1 in every 10 men is gay. From the number of people I know and what I see in everyday life, this number seems way too high (the world would have been much more gay than what it is now if this number were true).

Studies aside, what do you guys personally think the actual ratio is?

I am not asking for statistics from a certain study (wouldn't hurt if you post something interesting), but want to know what you think from your personal experience.

I think the ratio is more like 1:50 or lower. Definitely not higher than this.

I can honestly tell you, from all of the men I've dealt with, those who were married, still married, never married, always thought they were gay, realized they were gay later in life, are bisexual, etc. that the number is much HIGHER than 1/10.

I bet at least 1 out of 3 guys is gay/bi/or at least wouldn't mind making out with another guy.

whoa, are you serious? I know around 15 guys that I talked to almost daily. I know about 50 more I know personally enough to trigger my gaydar if they were inclined. They all seem overtly straight.

i think 1 in 10 is fairly accurate, if not slightly lower. but, part of that 10% isnt out/is bi and in a hetero relationship/only wants to kiss a guy, so it probably seems much lower.

There is a big difference between actually gay and out gay, so it is very hard to get accurate numbers. The gay population in the U.S. is said to be growing five times faster than the population as a whole, but it is easy to figure out this is mainly because more gays and lesbians are coming out of the closet, not that more people are actually gay. Large cities probably have a larger percentage than smaller towns and rural areas, as even in this time of more acceptance, a lot of gays still tend to move to urban areas.

According to the media, the acceptable percentage estimate of gays is 4-6% of the general population.

I think every human is born with innate bisexual tendencies, but they are rapidly suppressed under social/family moral/religious pressure.

More than 450 species of vertebrate are having bisexual behavior, and that happens especially in socially complex species. Human are definitely the more socially complete species in the world, so I wouldn't be surprise to se bisexuality as a norm in a (human) society where gay taboo never existed.

This considered, I think that 1:10 is still a pretty poor proportion. But for the society in which we actually live, it's pretty realist, and I think, a bit exagerated. I guess it includes, like it was previously said, the "heteroflexibles", the non-out and the bi's.

I also tend to think that this proportion will grow along with the "normalization" of the gay phenomenon.

In terms of behavior, one study with which I participated in designing determined that approximately 4.5% of individuals living in the metro area of Philadelphia have had in the past 2 years or are currently having sex with members of the same sex. 55,000 people participated in this study.

Even then, I don't think we can rely such a study. This is not reality, but what people accepted to tell you.

The statistic must be illustrated as 4,5% of individuals living in the metro area of Philadelphia admitted that they've had in the past 2 years or are currently having sex with members of the same sex.

We can't calculate the % that remained silent about it. And I'm sure that would make this 4,5% grow big time.

I make no blanket statements about the general population in my post.

Meanwhile there are tools to assess the general percentages of people that choose to remain silent on their behavior (not identity, that's different).

I shared the finding b/c of the topic area and to illustrate one study (among dozens that have been conducted) that demonstrate that in terms of behavior, gay and bisexually behaving individuals account for at least 4% of the population.

Well....here is some hard evidence http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/gay-sex-vs-straight-sex/

45% of gay people have had 5 or fewer partners (vs. 44% for straights)

As for straight men, a surprisingly high 13% have had a same-sex experience, and another 5% haven't yet but would like to.

I agree with this. Now that I live in a country where being gay doesn't bat an eyelash, and guys don't grow up being bombarded with hetero norms, it seems as though more like half the guys are open to sex with men. Almost everyone, on the other hand, seems game for sexual experimentation.

Here again, "same-sex experience" can be pretty large. I mean, kissing a guy because you were playing bottle when you were 13 and the bottle stopped on Eric can be considered, by straight guys, as serious gay material hahaha...

It really depends on who you ask. Ask any christian or repuGlican, or other religious and political cults and their sheep, and I am sure that the % would be so bloody low. icon_mad.gif

My feeling (and hope), is that the amount of Us is much higher than any statistics published thus far. icon_biggrin.gif

This may be the least scientific way of determining anything, but have you ever noticed how many ads for gay phone "chat lines" there are in alternative newspapers like the CityPaper here in DC, or the Stranger in Seattle? (Every city has one I guess.)
The ratio of straight chat lines to gay seems to be about 2-1.
The same alternative weeklies seem filled with ads for gay escorts and "massages."
Would only 4% of the population be able to support that much... um "commerce?"

On a side note, I've always wondered who's spending money on "chat lines" since we have this thing now called the internet!

They've been kicking around that 10% figure, practically forever.
It has to be considerably higher than that, if you could get all the married men who are living a lie to come out and be counted.

And, I think that bisexuality must be around 50%, again, if men had the guts to reveal their true sexual desires.

Yes, all the about the definition of gay, and I can pick tons of them out of my hat :

Guys masturbating only thinking about men
Guys having sex only with men
Guys having sex more often with men and occasionally only with women
Guy who had at least one homosexual experience
Guy who never had sex with men, but have fantasies about it
    etc...

The problem is that to get statistics, you need to ask people where they stand, and it's impossible to quantify how much people would never admit any gay experience of desire, even under completely anonymous survey.

IT's also well know than some man are in denial, and refuse even to acknowledge to themselves how they feel about man sex.
