A radio news program invited a doctor to discuss the treatment for cure of LGBT people. This is a famous radio program that most parents listen in the morning while they have breakfast. I couldn't even finished mine but I decided to pay attention to the whole section and find out their basis for their "scientific" reasoning.

As every homophobic and ignorant person, like the doctor and radio commentator, started their reasoning by saying that being gay is an aberrant-immoral behavior and that a proper treatment could bring the people to the right path in life. According to him, there are to kind of gay people: the ones who accept it and have a degenerate life of constant party, and the ones who blame themselves for feeling like that. He said that the ones who feel the blame can be treated and correct their behavior.

The doctor recognized that homosexuality is not part of the pathology book in psychology but he thinks this happened because of the LGBT community in the USA making pressure on the scientific research to lean on that conclusion. For this "doctor", it was a huge mistake because it has spread the gay people in the world.

To make it more interesting, the doctor and commentator claim that they are not homophobic and that they respect gay people. Days ago, the commentator of the same radio program was complaining that he saw two guys holding hand on the street. Once again, he said he wasn't homophobic but he doesn't want gays to rub it in his face. Gays should only do that in private.

I don't know how to feel about all of this. I could laugh about this ignorant people but the truth is that whole society is ignorant about LGBT culture. People thinks that being gay means to have life with no goal and think about party all the time. For them you are gay only if you are travesty or extremely flamboyant. People make fun of being gay all the time. I would like to go that clinic or the radio and protest but the reality is that there is no LGBT pride spirit from us neither. If you check gay network site in Ecuador and most of the people is the closet and they are happy living like that.

I feel furious and disgusted about this kind of people. I'm in the scientific field, so what pissed of the most is that this so called "doctor" thinks that scientific research could be bias when he said that LGBT people force the scientific research to eliminate homosexuality from the pathology books. According to me, science is one of the fields that only deals with facts and truth, not about people prejudice.

I knew that the society in my country is not ready to be gay friendly and the idea of having worthy, respectful and fearless life was going to be difficult, but when I here all this makes me think that we are going backwards. I don't want say that I won't find happiness here and that I have to leave the country to be free but I don't want to be part of the problem of not doing anything for me... for my community... for the upcoming youth.

This kind of thing makes me clinch my teeth and shake my head in disbelief. A cure? WHAT? icon_rolleyes.gifThe only thing I can offer is that you have to laugh at these ignorant, stupid, self absorbed people and hope that in their heart of hearts they offer some glimmer of humanness to others in some way in their day to day lives. We just can't fight everyone that spews this kind of crap. All we can do is show the world that we are honest, good people that lead good lives and respect one another. We need to lead by example as a group. These perceptions they have are not based on reality, but are often based on some scene they've seen on T.V. I often have a big problem with the stereotypes they portray on T.V. often of gay men prancing around like Mary Poppins and Gay women being the opposite. It certainly doesn't show us normal guys and girls that look like everyone else that are trying to live good, decent lives and blend into society without disassociating ourselves from the population. We are the ones that are often left out of today's media outlets. In time I believe we will show as a larger, more diverse crowd and we will make great strides. In the meantime, we should celebrate the strides that we have made and continue to work for the equality of all people. Lead by example every day and we will see a difference.
