The GHOST of the GOOD TIMES Building in Chicago

Today I read that the last of the residents of the infamous Chicago Cabrini-Greens Projects was being forced out. The Cabrini-Greens projects included a building that is the fictional residence of the Good Times TV show. Apparently that particular building, shown below, was already demolished. YET, I took trip down the street in Google street view and pressing the arrow key to move ahead made the building appear then disappear. It's like the street paths overlapped from different time periods. Truly odd. Can anyone in Chicago tell me what they know of this particular building?

View from around the corner (N. Cambridge Rd.):

Around the block going down N. Larrabee:

Same view going down N. Larrabee with a single step forward (the building disappears and you are years ahead in time.) Odd!

Did you ever work on something so intensely that when you pulled away from it you felt totally different? Discombobulated?

That's how I felt after researching this with maps and street views for two hours. icon_wink.gif

There was nothing "good times" about that building. Did anybody watch Candyman?

Oh cool! I almost watched that movie the other day. Now I can study the aerial view of the projects and figure out which one was the Good Times building for sure.

The building was recently torn down as part of Chicago's effort to overhaul (more like get rid of) public housing units. Chicago has been tearing down its projects for the past ten years or so and the Good Times building was one of the last to go.

That first streetview was taken about two years ago before the building was demolished. The second streetview is a more recent image as Google has been re-photographing some cities this year with their higher resolution camera. Hence why it appears in the old photo but not in the new one.

I had to dodge that streetview car twice on the streets here in New York as now they're redoing NYC too.

What happened to the cross street and the little black kid on his bike? This thread is freaking me out.

I think the second picture I was right at the cross street on Google view and it just looks like the church is further away because of the Google view camera elongating everything close to the camera (like the cars).

It's research. I'm writing a novel about a troubled man who believes that the families in the Good Times and All in the Family sitcoms are real, and he sets off on a journey to meet them. Called "In Search of Good Times"
