Where'd you come up with 340,000 gays in the US service?

    Time Magazine:
"According to a Jan. 26 study by the Williams Institute at UCLA's School of Law, there are an estimated 66,000 lesbians, gays and bisexuals currently serving in the U.S. armed forces"

The truth is, no one knows. The estates of GL percentages of the population seem to range from 10-25...so I picked what I believe to be a reasonable best guess of 15%. I then used the 2009 numbers of active and reserve service men and women and divided.

It's still wrong though if it only affected one American.

Very moving, not sure what Obama was to represent with that rainbow flag in the back ground?

Makes me know I made the right decision, in cancelling my application, to join the military as a youth, as I'm headstrong, and did not need them to break me to build me, to be like them. I myself also respected the rule of no homosexuals, and was not willing to begin living a life of untruths either; I have always been true to myself.

Johnnyhotsauce saidok, this is gonna be taken totally wrong, but i'm not so sure if dadt is so very wrong, i served in the air force for as a C-130 engine guy for 4 years, 2 in japan, 2 in little rock, and 6 months deployed to balad afb in Iraq. I don't really believe your sexual preference is anybody's business, and I don't understand why gay people are so compelled to tell everyone, I don't wanna know what my mom is into, so why am I gonna tell her what I do? theres a lot of things fucked up about the military, tons of shit, like there is an article in the UCMJ that states people (man n woman) can only fuck missionary, nobody is flippin out bout that. I don't like makin other ppl uncomfortable, and i'm not sure we should go shovin' "gay is awesome" down everybody's throats, to me THAT is borderline sexual harassment. If you have never served then as far as i'm concerned you really should have no opinion on this, not because you're not entitled to one just that you haven't lived it. I'm sure I just stirred up a great big hornets nest, it is not my intention to piss people off or incite a flurry of fiery retorts, at all, but I just wonder if you fully consider the consequences of that happening, I promise you it's not as simple as a little policy change. would really like to hear what more vets think bout this

DADT is about the military/government telling humans what they can or can't talk about instead of allowing armed forces personnel to handle it within their own ranks. I think marines can handle what is said among themselves without needing to be told. No one expects a soldier to start flaming out, but if a fellow service member finds out about a gay comrade, the gay soldier shouldn't be kicked out. it's not about permission to have gay pride parades on base or forcing your bunkmates to listen to what you do sexually without fear of repercussions. It's a bit more fundamental than that.

Johnnyhotsauce saidthey tell you everything tho, like i said even what position to fuck in, as i see it u pretty much forfeit any and all rights the moment you join, but thats what it is service before self, i agreed to do pretty much whatever was asked of me like it or not without complaint, it's was really hard to accept the fact that i was owned, but it was what i swore to do. i think theres way more de-humanizing shit in the military than that if you ask me, the whole system needs tossed, start over. many of the policies are outdated and contradictory, i never had a problem with dadt, i did however have a serious problem with being treated like shit in a myriad of ways simply because i wasn't married, sometimes it was really bad, THAT is the main reason i got out, if you wanna fix somethin get the way single people are treated fixed, gay and straight single people will thank you. (most gay people in the military are single, so you would just be helpin more people)

Thats is exactly the reasion I withdrew my application to join. I am to head strong and independent. I could just see one day, myself refusing to get up, because I did not want to, and the shit I would be in just for that. I was not willing to give up self, so they could break me to mould me, and I made the right choice too.

I am a pure homosexual, yet never came out, as a lead by example, and the fact I have lived under the one roof with one man for 20 years says it all. Just as you mum may of never talked about what she was into, but if she did not have you by artificial insemination, just by having you says she was into cock. But I never talk about my sex life either, so there is only one way of finding out what I am into.. But Oh how I would be loved here if all I talked about was sex, the diffrence it would make. But I'm not willing to sell myself out to do that either.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidThat was a very good video, Moscow. Question: Did you use Photoshop Elements to make it? Was curious as to what software you used to make this.

I am in the process of making a video for school. It is not political but an art project. I am using Adobe Premiere Elements.

I am not nearly that sophisticated...all I used was imovie..and an old version at that.

Thank you for the compliment...I liked the picture of Obama with the rainbow and soldiers because I perceive that the vast majority of gays and lesbians voted for Obama. I know a lot of people feel they have been let down by Obama.
I like the way in the picture he is looking contemplatively over at the soldiers that he now commands. They look to him for leadership and so do we.

yeah nice video. draper is correct, the 340K number needs to be examined and corrected in the video.

Really? Then who the fuck gets my "military" retirement upon my death? My wife? Yeah right.. my husband? Illegal..

Sexuality isnt a part of ones service? Then why is the pentagons healthcare budget on course to be 30 percent of its over all budget? (yeah that includes 'SPOUSES' and dependents of service personnel. "gay" ones 'can't' have spouses can they?) Why is there "family" housing? For 'gay' service members? only a discharge.. your statement about sexuality is wrong and actually rather insulting on SO many levels.. hence this barbaric ban.

If it was corrected to read "somewhere between 60,000 and 340,000" the point would be made without immediate scrutiny.

You think it´s good that guys are forced to lie about their partners? That they have to creep around like they have done something wrong and pretend to be someone they are not?

It´s not like we are saying that they should give power point presentations on felching.

    Look up "Internalized homophobia"

Fixed the number per the suggestion...the text now reads

"There are between 60,000 and 340,000 Gay and Lesbian Soldiers currently serving in the US military."

It should be running live now.

I fixed the link in the OP.

Thanks for the suggestion...I hope this makes it more accurate.

    An aside....

I think there is reason to believe the percentage of G&L in the military may be higher than the general population. I think, like the priesthood, people who are fighting their sexuality may seek out something that they think will help them fight their urges.
