Finding that guy off of Santa Monica Blvd?

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy a rousing night at the bar as much as the next guy, but I don't always feel like its a great place to meet dating material. Sure it happens, but I want to know how guys did it before the Internet and gay bars? I never have the guts to talk to a guy I was interested in unless I absolutely knew he was gay. I don't want to sound like that guy who tries to lure otherwise straight guys into messing around, but how do you approach those guys who might me but don't do the scene or web? Discuss.

Strangely, gay bars predate gay identity.

But in terms of help, take a look at gay organizations and clubs. Gay book clubs, or rugby teams are good places to meet people that are not just looking for hanky panky and who have a mutual interest.

I don't think I said all that. Just asking about where and how to meet guys outside of the bars and chatrooms (where its almost always about getting laid).

Well, since you live in Southern California there are loads of options.

The beach is the obvious one (i.e. the Gay beach - Black's beach, etc.)

I don't know your religious beliefs but Church is a great place to meet guys.

The supermarket never fails (Gelsons, Whole Foods, etc.)

There are clubs for everything imaginable (i.e. wine, knitting, baseball, wrestling, ad nauseum).

Politics is a good one. Getting involved in GLBT outreach for a political candidate is a lot of fun.

There is the Hollywood community center that offers opportunities for different meetings, mentoring, etc.

Almost forgot the Gay Mens Chorus and other arts organizations.

Highways is cool if you are performance oriented.

In Southern Calfornia anything you can imagine is available Gay flavored.

Frontiers Magazine has listings for lots of clubs, organizations, and events.

Your tagline "Finding that guy off Santa Monica Blvd." makes me recall a story that still makes me laugh.

Eons ago it used to be great fun to drive down Santa Monica Blvd. (the area around Yukon Mining and the Formosa) and watch the street hustlers (you can see this in films like Hustler White).

My friend John had a beautiful 1951 Buick Super Convertible that he fully restored. It had ten layers of lacquer.

Anyway, one summer night we were headed west on Santa Monica in that car with the top down. We pulled up to an intersection in the center lane (right around Paramount). Next to us in the curb lane was some Chrysler K car convertible with some smart ass who was talking to the very cheeky working boy on the corner.

K car asked "How big is your dick" and working boy, without missing a beat, replied "bigger than your wallet".

    Ah Hollywood.

    Good luck,
    Terry

McGay, next time you approach me under the false pretense of being my dear state senator, I swear I'm gonna...um...do something really really mean.

Ooh, I gotta go. I see fingers tapping under the divider, and methinks I smell a whiff off Old Spice....

Edit: but to contribute meaningfully, groundcombat, I meet guys most successfully through friends and mutual acquaintance. It takes a little of the randomness out of the equation.
