    From the AJC.com website:

Yuhanna Williams was still clutching his knife when a Rockdale County sheriff's deputy, reporting for work as a security guard at Ingles, came upon the Covington man's body Saturday night in the grocery store's parking lot. Williams' shooter hovered nearby.

"This guy tried to rob me and I shot him," Ryan Moore, identified by several media outlets as a 23-year-old Georgia Tech graduate, told Deputy Dexter Harris, as reported in the investigator's incident report.

Emergency crews were dispatched but arrived too late to save Williams, 30, who was shot in the head. His accomplice escaped on foot and remains at large.

Moore, who faces no charges, has emerged as a hero to many. Commenters on the Rockdale News website were largely supportive

Certainly the knife wielder's life was worth less than however much money was in the victim's wallet, right?

I would have shot the guy's leg, not his head.
That is, IF I would ever stoop to own a gun and carry it around with me loaded.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for Williams, chances are if Moore hadn't had a gun, he may well have ended up with his neck sliced for what little he had in his wallet. As for shooting the guy in a less fatal place, when your being attacked a person doesn't have much choice but to end the problem the best way he can. We don't know what position Williams may have had Moore in before he shot him, and who knows the position of the guy who fled. I have to say I'm glad this young man had protection with him, because his productive life may have ended at the hands of a thug, had he not. Yes, I'm conservative in this instance aren't I !!!

I guess conservativejock is expecting us to cry 'foul.' But I support self-defense. Moore was in imminent, life-threatening danger.

I don't know if I would regard him as a "hero" since that connotes a certain level of selflessness and this was merely self-defense. But, as long as Moore was a legal gun owner, acting in self-defense, I see nothing wrong with his actions. Even if he didn't have a carry-on permit, the most he should get is fined for that.

It'll be the last time that guy steals from someone. Problem solved.

Moore could have just handed over the money in his wallet, however, he would then be taking a chance that Williams would decide he didn't want to leave behind a witness to the crime. Do I wish he could have shot somewhere that only disabled him and didn't kill him? Sure. But I think in the split second of time, Moore was thinking of the quickest way to take himself out of a life threatening situation. When you live in the Detroit area like I do, it is easy to think of yourself of possibly being in a similar situation. There is not a day that goes by here that you do need see in the news a car jacking, home invasion, or armed robbery and usually it is more than one.

Additional info from a Rockdale County newspaper:

Apparently comments made by a friend of the victim who came to ppick up the friends car -- OP

Two men reportedly approached the victim around 8 p.m. in what appeared to be an attempted car-jacking. There was a struggle, and the victim received cuts on his chin and arms and one of the robbers was shot in the struggle, reportedly in the head.

The keys to the car were found about ten parking spaces down. The friend speculated they might have been dropped as the other robber fled.

Don't have much sympathy for a robber who for an easy buck would have killed Moore or seriously injured him.
