This topic is something I'm grappling with as it is the Holidays and I'm a huge wine lover. I used to drink alot of it until I noticed it was putting on the pounds big time. I am now and have been for a while seriously training to get really fit and at my best- I know it's really open to each person's opinion, which is what I'm looking for---Is it THAT BAD to have a glass or two of white wine at a party? Is it going to wreak havoc and destroy all the hard work that I have been doing all this time? This is what I have been reading so I have been avoiding it like the plague. Can you guys tell me what you think? I'm 41 y.o and I'm in a serious training mode, but it would be nice to indulge in a glass of wine at parties. I trust all of your opinions very much, and thanks! icon_confused.gif

yes you can. I drink about a bottle a week (spread out over about 4/5 days). The american hypersensitivity about alchohol has much mroe to do with Temperance and the Southern Baptists than it does with health

Just don´t binge, or drink lots of sugary cocktails

A bit of alcohol every day can be good for you. Wine has some components that promote good health. Like anything, it isn't good in excess.

Alcohol, and sugar, in wines, have calories. Just bear that in mind and you'll be just fine. You really should have been able to figure this one out on your own.

Well I have a Pedometer which I use all day and it suggest walking for up to 13,000 steps a day to lose weight. That seems like an awful lot. I also read that I should drink 32 8-ounce glasses of water everyday. All that is a lot of work for me to do. It is so hard to find time to go for a walk and I hate the taste of water and bottled water is worse. The only thing I like is cold spring water but no way can I get any of that... I just wish there was an easier way.

1 or 2 glasses of wine at a party is perfectly fine. But are you snacking with that wine? That's likely where your culprit is, especially the cheese and crackers.

I go out for a few sugary cocktails a couple times a month, yet somehow continue to make gains.
How? It's all about calories in vs calories burned.
In fact, I think I'll go out tonight after my workout. icon_biggrin.gif

Some research has suggested that drinking white wine (in moderation) increases lung function by about 3%.

    Ultimately it's your call.

Since you posted this in the weigh loss subforum, I'll advise you to not drink.
Alcohol is fermented sugar. Think of the glass of wine like a liquid cookie.
Alcohol retards digestion. Your body won't digest fats until it's finished breaking down the alcohol. What this means is that the fats you eat are more likely to be stored as fat in your body.

If you want to celebrate, go for it. Don't deceive yourself into thinking that the glass contains a nutritious elixir.
