A couple of nights ago, a (new) friend told me I was the first gay guy he's ever known well enough to consider a friend.

The first thing that popped in to my head is "Ha, I doubt it, you just didn't know you've had friends who're gay."

I'm not trying to get into a "not all 'mos fit the stereotype" discussion, I just got a kick out of it. It makes me wonder about A) other not-immediately-noticeable minorities and B) if other minorities (say, ethnic) were not visibly identifiable, how things might be different.

I'd feel a little uncomfortable telling someone, "You're the first black friend I've ever had!" Just seems rude.
