I Have A Strange Psychosis.....

I've noticed that when I start liking a guy......I mean really LIKING a guy(falling into infatuation with him) that I can't remember what his face looks like. There's this new guy at the office that I like, and he is not on facebook so I don't have a photo of him. I can describe him exactly(eye color, hair, eyebrows, etc) but I can't picture his face in my mind if I want to fantasize about him. I could see his face in my mind when I wasn't attracted to him.....but now that I have feelings for him I can't picture his face.

    Anyone else ever experienced this?

Hmmm it happened on an off...Sometime my mind replaces the face with someone who has a similar look, but then I usually shake it off and get back the original face in my mind lol

Happens to me when I get that feeling. Its only after a few weeks that I can actually picture his face.

    Its kind of annoying sometimes...

Interesting, I've never heard of this before. But then I rarely remember any faces at first meeting.

Could it be that your memory is no better nor worse than it ever is regarding faces, the difference here being that you WANT to remember this guy? So that you're fixating on him, and therefore think this is a memory issue with liking a guy?

Do you always remember the faces of people at your first meeting? Think about this before answering. Isn't it only the guys you like that you really want to remember, not everybody you run across? So that you only notice this with them, but not with all the other people you meet, whom you forget as well, but don't care about?

    Well, just an alternative thought...

Oddly enough, I do a similar thing: I forget his name. Sometimes I draw a blank and almost panic for a moment until I can grasp it..

It's not strange and it's not a phychosis. It's very common.

There is actually a 'Sex and The City' episode about this....when Carrie meets Aidan (i believe) for the first time, then later, the girls asked her what does he look like.. and Carrie goes..." i don't know... I can't picture his face or even know his name...i just know this feeling inside..."

Interesting point, and I can see its plausiablity. I'm really good with faces and names for people I meet - except when its a guy that I like. And not just a "like," but someone who I'm sexually and physically attracted to.

Sounds like a very light case of Prosopagnosia. Have you head any degree of head trauma? The part of the fusiform gyrus that deals with attraction might have been hit a little too hard. icon_confused.gif

Hmm that is very interesting. Nope can't say that I have had that either.

Guys are my passion so I can always picture a handsome man when I need to. I could probably even recall a lot of faces from RJ!

In real life I'm a bit of a stalker so I analyse guys' and girls' faces daily. But I never remember their names though...need to work on that one!

Ive never been in danger of falling for anyone, but this same thing has happened with guys I like platonically. People I despise I can remember clear as day, but when someone really makes an impression, I can remember every detail about them, except their face.

It could be because the face is the least important thing to me? Not sure, but Im glad to read Im not alone with this.

Do you really think they're hot then? Or are you associating a feeling with this person, which fogs the mind's eye?

I have the same problem. When I forget what his face looks like, I just stop shoving it into the pillow and roll him over for a few seconds to remind me.

It may be your rational side knows nothing will become of it...so your mind blocks it

That might actually be a very logical explanation. Or perhaps my inner self is trying to stop me from falling for a guy.

Celticmuscle, you're reminding me of a passage from a favourite story...

"How very odd", I thought when I wakened at seven and slid heavy eyed out of bed - having forgotten completely what he looked like, but holding wonderingly in my consciousness a better than three dimensional memory of him."

Interesting theory, but if that were true I would have had this issue for most of my long life, and it just now is recently an issue.....perhaps over the last couple of years. I'm a visual person, dream in vivid color, could draw you a very accurate picture of other coworkers I've known the same length of time.....actually sometimes I think I stare or visually scrutinize someone to the point where they get uncomfortable.....bad habit, I know....

I call it a psychosis because it is really unnerving to me and it rarely happens. I can logically tell you everything about his face, the eye color, the prominent brow, the hair style, the prominent bicuspids..... details that are writ to memory. But for the life of me I can't picture what he looks like.

Good to hear other guys seem to be having the same issue though....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some guys wonder in disbelief of the guys I fall for. I sometimes have that same feeling when a guy falls for me.

I asked a close gay friend if he thought this guy I'm talking is handsome, and my gay friend thinks this guy is totally hot! But he thinks every guy is hot so I guess it doesn't really count.
