Her vocals aren't that great. She can't really dance. She doesn't have the mainsteam attractiveness like Beyonce. Yet she hits number with almost all of her singles. What are your thoughts?

I definitely can't get enough of her.

no wait .... she does has a nice voice .... and her songs happen to hit with the beat .... the perfect beat ....

I guess she just happen to get together with some really good producers and after that, is just promotion on her label .....

she can't sing for shit, but either can Madonna. she is a hot chick and has some very talented people around her! She is very much produced and packaged for mass appeal and retail success!

Agreed. Strangely the only album for Madonna I actually cared for was the only one where she did her own thing. That one wasn't a success.

Rihanna personifies slickly produced music and visuals wrapped in a pop-tinged R&B/hip-hop package that has always worked, and will likely keep working, as long as she can deliver the goods. Her voice isn't great, but it's distinctive, and that's all that matters. (Cher, Madonna, and Britney all created huge careers using mediocre, but distinctive, vocals paired with unforgettable visual images) She also takes fashion chances -- some work, some not so much -- but it gives her a certain edgy appeal to the audience that she is catering to.

Right place right time! I'd much rather listen to her or Madonna over Moo-riah sCarey or Celine Dion!

Her songs come with some really addictive beats, that just gets in your head after a few times and then you start liking them. Like Only Girl, heard it once on radio, next thing downloaded and been hearing it since then.

She is really sexy, very hot.

But that Bozo red coiffed mess of a hairdo has got to go. icon_rolleyes.gif

She's a deep brunette now. She just changed it. But I think the red looked good in the "Only Girl In The World" video

OH... yeah.. She's ALSO a survivor, which people like! After the pics from the Chris Brown incident the public took a little more notice, and she showed she was a strong young woman, which gay men love, and women like to look up to.

There's a guy who I CrossFit with, buff man's man straight guy, who BELTS "Only Girl In The World" like he wrote the track. he loves it SO much, because it's fun. (We re-worked the lyrics after a bit cause it was too funny and we couldn't concentrate.)

I would agree, the package makes the difference, it's what brings the attention.

I agree whole-heartedly... especially with your explanation regarding many of today's (and yesterday's) distinctive voices.

    Very well-worded icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah I disagree and think she actually has a really beautiful voice, especially in slower songs like Unfaithful, Take a Bow, or Russian Roulette. Doesn't have to be classically impeccable to be beautiful. Plus I feel like there's a lot of variety among her stuff and most of it seems fairly distinct in the genre. And to be radio-popular, it helps to be catchy and fun to sing along with. So I'd say her songs are unique and well-executed which make for good #1's.

I agree also. She doesn't have the best voice and she's not that great live, but she does have a distinct voice and it's beautiful in my opinion. She knows the type of songs that let her showcase her vocal ability. This is how I feel about Britney also. She doesn't have the best voice, but she does have a beautiful voice for her vocal range (although I believe she's capable of a much stronger voice but her record label doesn't let her use it).

She has Jay-Z behind her, so shes collaborating with the best artists along with getting the BEST producers and guys in the studio to create her and her beats, which always go hard as hell

Plus, shes a beeaautiful woman with a pleasant voice, and a sexy voice as well.

I'd say amazing music producers who know the perfect beats and melodies which will work best for her voice. A good producer can make ANYONE sound good!

She's just brilliant! Ties West Indian influences with her music such as Man-down. Also, she brought more house, and industrial beats to r&b which started from "Please Don't Stop the Music."

Man Down is actually very Caribbean-y.

People want pretty people to be successful.

Same voice, same producers, same agents, same collaborators, same lucky breaks with a plain ole Jane and none of this would have happened.
