Her jewels sold and made millions, odd really . The British and Aussie for that matter, never took to her in her lifetime., with one exception.

Ex -Prim minister Stanly Baldwin was sitting musing in the Carlton Club with a cronies. Britain had just survived the Nazi onslaught of 1940, and churchill was roaring Britian defiance on Radio. Britian was still a long way from being clear of woods but at least Hitler had turned east towards the USSR, had given Britain a breather.

"You know" said Baldwin , "life is very strange. I mean, take this Country. Everything seems pointing to utter disaster. Every prospect is bleak, then miraculously, someone appears and changes everything, and lo! the nation is saved."

There where solomon nods all round. "certainly Winston is doing a pretty good job," Agreed an old dinosaur.

" I mean about Winston,' exploded Baldwin.

    " I mean Wallis Simpson!"

He meant that by by bewitching the then Prince of Wales, Edward VIII, the American divorcee made it imposible for him to take the throne, saving us from a frightening pro Nazi monarch.

As it was we got his utterly decent and patriotic brother George VI and thus Queen Elizabeth, so the old boy was right, life can be odd.

No Wallis just would never of done, she just did not have the right breeding or upbringing for one. The only piece of cutlery on the table would of been a fork, and fine English cuisine would of been replaced with hamburgers too; no she just would never of done as our Queen.

Actually there could have been an accommodation for Wallis Simpson. As there will be for Prince Charles & Camilla.

But British ruling circles realized what a nut-job Edward was, and used this pretext to force him from the throne. He gave them the rope, and they used it. So in that sense, yes, an American gold-digger removed an incompetent & treasonous British monarch.

The late Queen Mother, HRH Queen Elizabeth, was once to refer to MRS S. As the lowest of low.

It does appear true that both Elizabeth and her husband "Bertie" did not want to become King & Queen. They preferred a life of quiet obscurity, but older brother Edward's abdication, brought on by Mrs. Simpson, put the shy & stuttering Bertie on the throne. And Elizabeth always maintained it was becoming King that ruined her husband's health, and gave him an early death. So yes, Elizabeth hated Simpson.

An interesting look at that period in British history can be seen in the current movie "The King's Speech" starring the brilliant Colin Firth as George VI, and Helena Bonham Carter as his wife in question here, Queen Elizabeth. I haven't seen it yet, but the reviews are very favorable, and I plan to take my husband to see it over the holidays as a treat. He's a great fan of British royalty.
