Any sane person has to appreciate Bill Maher, and how all of his clear, no nonsense, thinking, puts American Greed and false belief systems into perspective.

The problem with false belief systems is that they're false. The issue with greed is that it corrupts and doesn't make for happiness.

Agreed. Very thought provoking and, scarily accurate. All people care about is stuff, rather than others or themselves. What truly matters are people and our relationship with them ...not stuff and its acquisition. But yet more and more people want stuff and put their faith and trust in stuff. So sad.

He says it how he sees it and that is quite a refreshing point of view.

I don't know about the specifics of what he said in that video, but the juxtaposition of the emotional reactions to gaining non-essential items and religious fervor was certainly powerful.

That said, I'm also not sure how fair it was. To some extent you're probably seeing the madness of crowds at work in both cases. People becoming, in part excited because their in some context where they feed off of eachother.
Still, the general parallel, and illustration of the strong emotional attachment to 'things' (so to speak) was powerful.

(And I think ultimately rises above the argument, that I hope someone brings up, that this is a video of a some rich guy acting morally superior to a bunch of poor people getting excited about free 'trinkets' they can't afford.)

And folks like him wonder why the middle class calls them elitisticon_exclaim.gif

These people are happy because they're getting expensive things that rich people like Maher take for granted.

Since he is so anti-materialism, he should start donating all of his discretionary income to charity.

There's no rule that you have to donate your money if you're anti-materialistic.

Personally, I hate accumulating shit... to be owning less is more. However, I still love money... I love spending it on travel, food, parties, shows, etc.

I think everybody put more value on experiences (and they don't have to be expensive experiences) rather than worthless consumerist bull-shit, we'd all be better off.

I just think that whole video is a dick way to look at it. If you hate everything so much then just ignore it. You aren't going to be excited if you win a shit load of money on a gameshow? How is that greedy? Give me a fucking break. He is just angry. And it's also really easy to act like this when you are a famous person with your own damn show and no money problems. Have a beer Bill and relax for a second. And where does religion even come into this?

But I will admit, the oprah people are insane, and hilarious to watch. I don't know how they get people to act like that.

    Are some people greedy? Yes
    Are some people worldly? Yes
Is making broad stereotypical generalizations retarded? YES

I pay for HBO and enjoy watching Bill. Always figured he was way well off. Quite likely so. How many rooms is his primary residence in (NYC?) and other homes in LA and the weekend homes upstate, Hamptons and in ski country (Vail)??? The dude has bucks.
The folks whooping it up are middle class folks. So what if they are happy about getting some free(?) junk. And who the fuck has time to be at home watching Offfra (4pm?) when you should be at work?
Bill is Bill and the good ol' USA is a bunch of consumeristic beasts spending their retirement investment $$$ on worthless BS. Been going on forever. The advertising people are very effective.

I'm low key (and an atheist), so I tend to agree with Bill Maher about religious nuts, and about Oprah's audience members who go physically stark raving ape shit over a sweater.
