I have a friend (an Ex-Boyfriend) moving to Los Angeles to the Silver Lake area near the Silver Lake Reservoir. I would like to know what people think of the area? Things to do? Community? Quality of living? Shopping? Friendliness? etc.

Even though I will be a few hours away here in San Diego, it would be nice to know that he could find things to do and make friends there. I could really use the info as he tends to get depressed and lonely. I will be the only family he has nearby. Tell me what you think of the area.

    Hey,
I love it! I live nearby and there's plenty to do and see...
Griffith Park for a hike or bike ride, MJs bar or Faultline for drinkin'... If he's a bohemian that doesn't mind the smell of pot smoke and wears Birkenstocks everywhere he'll fit right in!

Thanks. I hope I get more opinions. I will be taking him there to see the area after the April 9th when he will visit. He is moving from Atlanta, Ga. I am sure he is OK with the bohemian types, even though I hope there is not too much of a party drug culture. He has managed to keep away from that crowd (which is big in Atlanta) as he has had problems with it in the past.

I spend half my waking hours at Intelligentsia, the espresso bar at Sunset Junction and I've met a lot of nice ladies and gentlemen there.

Old? As in my age? Hmm.

Well, one thing's for sure -- the gay men there don't call themselves "str8" and that's a blessing.

People in West Hollywood are, like, so short. Go with Silverlake.

...as if I needed an other reason to STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM L.A.. It seems like a ruthlessly lonely place.

    But that's thinking like a New Englander/Texas I suppose.

See? It's easy -- move to LA, bond with the friendly folk, and mock the attitude queens. Free entertainment. icon_razz.gif

Silverlake has a great community there! I have alot of friends in that area. Like SquareJaw said, Akbar is great. Its one of the few bars I dont mind going to in town. You have my town of Pasadena 8 minutes down the road and lots to see and do here. Plus Im near by, so send him my way icon_razz.gificon_razz.gificon_razz.gif

Yes, it looks like there are lots of communities surrounding. He is not much into bars, but maybe he will go out once in a while. He needs to socialize and make friends.

I would be OLD but I have not been called ugly.
Hollywood Hills is where I live but SIlverlake has some good and bad.
We used to play volleyball on the grass there with a great mix of guys and go eat at some of good gay restaurants there afterwards, Have your friend contact me when he moves here if you like as I am not a bar or druggie but very social.

Yeah, I was trying to ignore the ugly and old comment and it looks like the comment was removed which is good. I hope he was just joking and people don't act like that. Atlanta has it's share of elitist (don't know why as none of them ever impressed me)

It sounds like Silver Lake will fit my friend well. Hopefully he can find some social stuff and can walk places without having to drive all the time. He liked it here in San Diego in the North Park / Hill Crest area and was able to walk to the Gay Center and shops and stuff when I was working.

Thats so funny .. we have a burrito man where I work every Wednesday. But yeah he likes that sort of thing and loves junk/fast food. He was very disturbed when the Popeye's near him burned down (he lives near centennial park in Atlanta where the tornadoes hit)

OMG...That was literally the first thing I thought about when A&F mentioned Silverlake. But I also enjoy the tranny Benito's on the way to Silverlake from Weho. We ain't got shit like that in Atalanna.

If he likes good fast food, there are amazing fish tacos on sunset and descanso (the name escapes now - something like "7 mares"), it has a blue awning and they're to die for. Also, Allegria on Sunset (it's in a strip mall) is amazing Mexcian food - down home gourmet. Really, there's so much. Edendale Grille on Rowena has an amazing patio for drinks (it's in a transformed fire house) and that's where the hip 20/30something set goes. And the best kept secret of LA is close by - Auntie Em's in Eaglerock, which has hands-down the best cupcakes ever - better than Sprinkles, better than Sweet Lady Jane, better than Magnolia or whatever other second-rate bakery people will rattle off. It's also an amazing cafe, to boot.
