Guitar or Piano?

I'm wanting to play a song for a guy I've been kind of dating and I'm wondering what you guys think. Guitar or piano? I'm wanting to do a cover of Muse's "Hysteria". With a guitar I'd probably have to sing which I'm afraid might ruin the song--piano I wouldn't have to sing but it would probably take more work. Any advice would be great

Which instrument do you think you're better at playing?

I think the song sounds good when played acoustically with a guitar (I guess because it's a rock song), but the piano would make it more interesting.

Why do you think it'll ruin the song if you sing it? Do you think you have a bad singing voice or that you wouldn't be in time because you're playing the guitar at the same time?

Well I'm pretty much monotone so that would sound terrible lol. I'm almost leaning towards another song/not even doing a song since we haven't been talking for that long. Plus Hysteria has some pretty clingy lyrics (i.e. 'Give me your heart and your soul')

Is it too early to be doing stuff like that? I'm not wanting to come off as a creep I just really dig music hahaha

Piano definitely! Well I use to like muse (I hate their current music), but you should play it on a piano. I like most of muse songs on a piano since it has a dark quality to them, very sad and depressing. You should try to learn space dementia, its definitely my favorite on a piano by them (newborn is another option that might sound good or sunburn). For a guitar maybe supermassive blackhole, sounds really good on guitar or bliss. maybe starlight!

How long have you known him for? Hysteria's lyrics, while great, may be a bit much if you just recently met him. If you don't want to sing then the piano may be the best way to go. But I'm a sucker for the guitar and some Muse songs have awesome riffs, someone pulling one of them off for me would make me putty in their hands. icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah I'm starting to lean towards guitar since it seems to seduce so easily hahaha but I can't think of any slightly romantic Muse songs that have relevant (non-clingy) lyrics. If anyone can think of anything that'd be great

That's a bit tough, all of Muse's lyrics are pretty powerful. Feeling Good from the Origins of Symmetry might be good. It's a love song but a little vague so I don't think it would come off as clingy. Here are the lyrics for quick reference:

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Reeds driftin' on by you know how I feel
    It's a new dawn
    It's a new day
    It's a new life
    For me
    And I'm feeling good
Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom in the tree you know how I feel
    It's a new dawn
    It's a new day
    It's a new life
    For me
    And I'm feeling good
    Dragonfly out in the sun
you know what I mean, don't you know
Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
    That's what I mean
And this old world is a new world
    And a bold world
    For me
Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
    Freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

Or you could go with Dark Shines, its a bit darker and more lusty though. Don't know if you want to go there. Here are the lyrics for this one too:

    Passing by
you light up my darkest skies
You'll take only seconds to draw me in
    So be mine
and your innocence I will consume
    Dark shines
    Bringing me down
    Making my heart feel sore
    Because it's good
    Hold your hands
    up to your eyes again
    Hide from the scary scenes,
    supress your fears
    So be mine
and your innocence I will consume
    Dark shines
    Bringing me down
    Making my heart feel sore
    Because it's good
    Your dark shines
    Bringing me down
    Making my heart feel sore
    Because it's good

    +1 on that!

If you wanna do another Muse song, consider Neutron Star Collision. It does have cheesy lyrics (I don't think it's suitable to sing to him right now), and it is from the Twilight soundtrack (I'm a hater of that movie) but I do like the piano bit in the end.

Mr. Potato, did you make a decision and go through with it? How did it go?
