the ads on here

Has anybody else noticed that the ads on here are starting to get spookily specific at times? I now regularly see ads for:
    • The airline I fly most, which is not one the biggest
    • The hotel chain I use, which is not one of the biggest
    • Overstock.com, which we recently started using, and showing specific stuff we looked at

Methinks RJ is getting too smart for its own good and I need to start dumping cookies more often.

Also, am I the only one who thinks these "Bathhouse" ads for Mandalay Bay are a little misleading? This to me looks like an ad for sex tourism, and I'm pretty sure the activities most gay guys associate with bathhouses wouldn't tolerated in a casino hotel that is -- I would assume -- predominately full of straight people.

And finally, has anybody bought anything from Adrian Bartol who advertised on here for a while? They look nice and they're mad cheap, just wondering how well they're made.

Bathhouse for Mandalay Bay ads? No I haven't seen those ads, but I now know what you've been searching and looking at on the internet. It's almost like I've just seen your cookies. lol

I was trying to figure out how to capture it and put it in my post. I hate casinos so that is not good target marketing on their part. But as far as Overstock goes I dug into their privacy policy and discovered something called "Behavior Marketing" which may explain the other phenomena. It's not necessarily BAD because I'd rather see ads for businesses I actually patronize than random shit about acai berries and "we buy gold" but it has a spook factor to it.

All I see is AIDS drugs, hahaha. I don't know if they are doing a good job with marketing or just being really offensive. "Gay site! Everyone's gotta have the AIDS, let's advertise there."

Before I blocked the ads, whenever I was looking to buy something and looked for it at Overstock, their ads would then appear here on RJ for several days featuring the products I looked at. Their ads also appeared on Youtube and Facebook and many other places after looking for something on the Overstock site. Of course many sites do this, but Overstock seems to be more persistent at following you to push their advertising.

Well this is the place I was talking about:

    http://www.justinplusone.com/2009/10/justin-are-you-asking-for-gay-orgy.html

They make it look like it's going to be nonstop "rump-rapture" (must credit the Justin with that one) and as I suspected that is not at all what this place is.

It's because tracking cookies are being accessed on various sites to see what you recently looked for or shopped for. Freaked me out too when I bought ink online and saw their ads appear in almost every website I went to after.

Mozilla + AdBlock Plus and you will never see any ads again. Simple and effective!

Yeah, I realized google has gone too far when I start seeing ads for DNAoligos and chromatography columns on here. And any little thing that I happen to shop for on-line... suddenly starts appearing in the banner ads for the news sites. And I start spontaneously getting brochures in the mail for hair dye, aimed specifically at 50ish gay men.

I reset the browsers cache and cookies every day, but I hear that is now considered quaint and ineffective due to computer fingerprinting.

Well i followed the instructions on Overstock's site, and the ads immediately became less specific, at least on RJ and Connexions. It is weird that news sites seem to be the worst, but I guess they are hard to sell ads on because nobody really seems to want to know what's happening. Unless Bristol Palin or Lindsay Lohan happen to burp or get a pimple.

I see some ads on here, and preferred when RJ had the paid membership option, which allowed you to block them all. Got some nice RJ logo T-shirts out of it, too.

Do we all get different ads? I didn't know that. I just get tampon & bra ads... icon_redface.gif

    "Mandalay Bay Bathhouse"

Yeah, that looks misleading... especially with the one where the cute Asian twink is stealing a glance at other guy, with ahint that some hanky-panky is about to ensue. And I'd totally do him too...
