Smoking pariahs vs being fat

    Just looking for comments on the subject of these two "evils" where it appears to be somewhat socially acceptable to make pariahs out for smokers in their presence but not about fat people in their presence.

    I have an example of where a very fat/obese anti-smoking inlaw has no problem with ostracizing smoking yet we're asked by the husband to not discuss weighty issues in her presence. In a couple of instances I've had to bite my tongue which isn't easy but done so only for harmony in the family so far... but I won't be able to bite it much longer.

    Another scenario, hypothetical;
    Everyones outside at the BBQ and a couple of guests move away for a smoke. They get hit with the comment from one or two guests along the lines of "do you ever think about quitting" or " don't know how you can smoke those things LOL"

    Yet woe the person who says to the fatso guest while they're loading their plate... "do you ever think about dieting" or "I don't know how you can eat all that food"

    Most people I think, thin or fat would be absolutely aghast at you for saying that to a fat person yet they wouldn't be as much if at all for anything about the smoker.

    While I suppose neither is right do you see the same thing happening around you

    I think both are not supposed to be discussed. If you don't like fat people, just don't fuck them. If you don't like smokers, don't smoke. Why bitch about it?

    I think the most tolerant acceptance of fat people over smoking people becomes from the fact that eating is a human need. They do it overly, but still, it's a vital need, essentially.

    Smoking is just a... trend ? Nobody needs it to live.

    Meanwhile, as the other guests inhale deeply of the lovely aromas from the barbeque, they are inhaling....

    ...and then later they all get in their cars spewing toxins at a rate of a thousand cigs a minute and drive away...

    Okay let's put it this way;

    Fat inlaw is discussing politely the evils of smoking in general in the presence of everyone some being smokers themselves. How the discussion got started doesn't matter, ,could have been anything innocent.

    Would you be as comfortable discussing the evils of obesity in general in her presence and others in the same way or would you be more hesitant than the smoking scenario.

    I'd discuss neither one. The fat lady critiquing the smokers across the yard is committing a huge (lol) social fax pas.

    I was at a party where a guy went on about smoking and he was a robust 290 lbs (my estimate) at about 5ft 6. I listened til my teeth began gritting, then loudly asked the gal tossing salad if there was any low-cal low fat dressing. I think the man got the point as he shut up about it. icon_lol.gif

    Since you dont get fat from sidestream food there is no justification for comment. Sidestream smoke though does affect others so it is less taboo to comment on it (though it is not polite to do so.)

    YES, I am just as comfortable and I have done it before, in fact, I offended all my friends who were overweight one day at a BBQ when the topic got onto weight management and someone piped up about the whole medical bullshit and tried to proclaim there own weight problem as out of there own hands and that my weight lose was so much easier because of my genetics.

    And I quote "Look your overweight not because you have a thyroid problem which you've never gotten checked or because you might have some genetic problem or because you some how store fat better then everyone else, your fat because while we've been sitting here today having a BBQ you've gone through approximately two and a half thousand calories for lunch and as you've mentioned tonight your going to a buffet with your family where I know your going to eat a hell of a lot more then your going to go home sit down and not move for the rest of the night and watch tv then go to sleep, the next morning you'll have a terrible breakfast, drink fizzy drink all day, eat crap food and not do a damned bit of physical exercise because you claim getting up and moving like that makes you feel horrible.

    No Danny, your not overweight because of some bullshit problem with your body, your overweight because you eat to much crap food, you don't exercise and you don't give a shit about your body. Your probably going to die an early death from a heart attack or stroke, brought on by stress and bad nutrition and leave your wife and daughter alone who btw could also stand to be taught proper nutrition before she truly hits that one way slippery slope of obesity as well."

    yeah, I kinda got tired of listening to the bullshit and hearing about how my genetics make it easier for me, like I didn't freakin struggle to lose the weight and start getting fit.

    Although, after all that about three months later he finally decided to talk to me again, he's lost a ton of weight which makes me uber happy icon_smile.gif

    Get an MD or DO, you'll have privileges to talk about smoking, obesity AND excess calories without problems. In fact, people will usually ASK you talk about them even if you don't want to. icon_lol.gif
