What a way to end a year, I had to put my cat down today after he was attacked by something outside this afternoon. Completely put a downer on my plans for New Years, skipping a party tonight. I feel that I did right the thing by putting him down since he would have no quality of life since there was so much nerve damage and he would most likely acquire an infection from all the lacerations. Of course all the vets were closed today when this happened so I had to drive him to the nearest animal hospital which was 25 mins away.

The jeans I wore today along with a shirt are covered in blood, feel like just throwing them away instead of washing them knowing my cat bled in my arms as I was rushing him to the hospital. I don't think I can bare to adopt another cat after seeing what happen to mine today, he didn't deserve it. I just happy he found his way back home allowing me have closure knowing I'll have his ashes. 336832-GF.jpg

I whole-heartedly empathize. I wish you continued blessings in the New Year. I cant
imagine how difficult it would be to lose a pet/loved one.

so sorry to hear about your nightmare...that's horrible! Your pet made its way back to you, because it knew you would be the loving owner and help it with its pain.....what you did is the hard part of love, making the call to end the suffering and being humane and merciful is a compassionate and loving act...my heart goes out to you....pets can be our children and it is hard.....icon_cry.gif

So sorry for your loss of your beautiful cat. I like the idea of having the ashes at home. I had dog ashes in a good looking white container with black script writing. This sits on a book case shelf, and has the name, and dates. I have pictures of my departed dogs in frames, and this is a comfort to me. I hope you find a peace and good memories of all the years you shared together.

@ Jockbod48: I only had him for a year, got him to replace my other cat who had assumedly died of old age though he never came home that night. Both of these cats were feral when found so they loved being outdoors. I was only gone an hour, when I let the cat out, to pick something up at home depot with my brother-in-law. I'll request for an indoor cat next time if I choose to adopt again in the future. The cat was wired like a dog though; loved riding in cars, rolled on his belly to get a belly rub, wasn't intimated by dogs.

Again, thank you everyone for your kind replies, reading them helps me tremendously having an outing to accepting this tragedy.

Ugh! That sucks, I'm really sorry to hear about your cat. I lost one a few years ago...he ran out one night and never came home which was very much unlike him. I searched for weeks hoping that he'd come running to the door, but he didn't. I'd had him for 6 years, and he was a little butthead, but I still miss him. I'm glad you have closure, and your cat didn't suffer any longer than necessary.

Do you by any chance know what could've attacked him? If you have wildlife in your area, or you have neighbors who let their dogs run loose then you may want to alert the proper authorities out of concern for the safety of others.

    Hope you feel better soon.

No idea what attacked him, most likely a coyote or a very large dog. There were sighting of coyotes in my town this past fall, it's always been a problem since a lot of farm land on this island has been built up. I was always hesitant about letting my cat outside, but unfortunately he had his feral roots and loved being outdoors. Quite the personality the little guy had, be hard pressed to find another cat with the same antics as him.

I had to do the same thing a few months ago, hardest thing i've ever had to do to. I have 2 cats left but he was my special cat, had him since i was a kid. I was so sad but also so happy the day i got his ashes. i know it's cliche but it does get better. You'll always have a special place in your heart for your kitty.
