Am I overlooking it? I find it hard to believe there is no forum for camping and hiking. These have to be among the most popular activities. We have forums for rodeo, but not for camping and hiking?

No kidding... those actually a couple of my favorite hobbies. I've never really had time to look them up, or concidered it on this site, but come to think of yeah, there's a lack of information on the topic on this site. I really miss hiking... haven't gone into the mountains in about 4 years. It's almost like attending a religious service or talking about something intimate with someone dear. I can't wait to get back into the sticks and rough it again with my old friends. Thanks for posting ;)

There are multiple threads about camping and hiking, but I agree that there should be a camping and hiking forum specifically. It might make it easier for people to meet hiking buds or just post pics of their favorite places.

Real jocks camp (take that however you will )

I'm all in favor of this. As is evident in my profile, one of my initial motivations for coming to RJ was the hope of finding friends to make camping/surfing/hiking/exploring/photographic trips.

Gay men don't hike, duh. Just look at the complete lack of comments in the hiking and camping posts! And there CERTAINLY aren't any RJ members with hiking photos in their profiles. I mean, there aren't any in MINE, for sure...

Mine either. Lord knows I've never used a hiking picture as my main photo. Perish the thought.

Of COURSE not, Chewey. Neither have I!

Like I said, gay men don't hike. Ever. We are allergic to the outdoors, and anything non-club related! Eeew Nature! Get it off get it off!

I also love hiking, and walking generally. Many of my ancestors were Cornish, so one of these days I would love to hike that part of England. Now if I could only convince my partner to take a trip to the UK!

My parents were avid campers, and I fell victim to it most weekends. I've done my time.

Actually, it would be a good forum. As long as I don't have to put up and take down the tent, I'm fine. Seems like such a waste of time, when I could just sleep in the car.

There are so many geographically diverse areas to explore, sharing info would be quite helpful.

Big into camping, hiking, backpacking, outdoorsy adventure sports. Don't meet too many in NYC that are into that.

I am in NYC...

but, when I say let's go hiking, please don't say OMG I know the best spot in Central Park!...

So did we get a dedicated sub forum yet?

Great idea. As i have found out thru experience recently, a Camping/Hiking propensity is a major personality clue. As telling about someone as the Real jock/ Athlete vs. Couch Potato divide.

I don't get it. I know Chris and Jeff (the RealJock admins) have seen this thread and the response to it. There has been a recent overhaul of RJ. And we have a forum for Water Polo but not for camping or hiking!!?? What gives?

Yeah, as an RJ Supporter I vote for a Camping & Hiking Forum. I own a camper trailer, and also tent camp off the back of my motorcycle. Been camping outdoors since I was 8, which makes it over 50 years. And when I camp I also motorcycle, bicycle, hike, kayak, hunt & fish. This activity deserves its own forum.

On average, I camp two weekends a month over the summer. Making and breaking camp are nothing once you're in the groove of it, and nothing beats cowboy coffee made over the campfire.

Funny this should come up. Met some younger guys recently that are afraid of the dark and would never sleep in a tent.

I guess in your case there should be a forum for flaming too. And as any viejo will tell you, "...el que no llora, no mama..."

So, again. Mods, please start a Camping/Hiking/Backpacking/Etc forum. Thank you.

I agree, there's nothing on Fencing and SCUBA either. Camping can be a little too vanilla (like golf) but Backpacking can often be quite extreme.

Orienteering is another related sport that doesn't get a lot of attention and demands skill and stamina.

For those interested in adventure (esp. if you don't use GPS or navigation aids other than a compass and a map) and like to get away from people, you might want to check out the "Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA)" located on the border between Minnesota and Canada. It is a huge roadless area (see map link below) with an enormous number of lakes interconnected by water ways and/or short portages. The use of motors is limited to day use on the lakes interfacing between civilization and the BWCA so the most common boats are canoes and kayaks. Camping gear, canoes, etc. can be rented from outfitters is you don't have any yourself. Guides are also available, if desired.

http://ely.org/images/area_map.jpg

When I was in the Boy Scouts, canoe trips into the area were very popular--and I'm hoping to get back there sometime again. Typically you wouldn't see another person (other than those in your group) after the first day. A lot of things have probably changed between then (50's) and now, but I'm told that the isolation is still common today as entry into the area is by permit and the number of permits allowed into the area is controlled. A permit specifies the entry day and entry location and the permit's duration. Maximum number of days per permit is two weeks. Maximum number of boats in a party is limited to 4; maximum number of persons in a party is 9 or less.

Links to more info can be found by Googling:

Georgia has some amazing hiking in surprisingly remote locations. Cohutta Wilderness Area is my favorite.
http://www.blueridgemountains.com/cohuttas.html

North Georgia Eastern Tennessee, Western Carolinas have a multitude places to explore that are great for weekend getaways. Camping, hiking, photography, fishing and hunting kayaking/canoeing/rafting.

And I promise, no banjo music to be heard for days.
