    Edited to put the lengthy background after the food for thought part:

    What I suggest below is only thinking outloud, so you guys don't yell at me too much. icon_razz.gif
    I haven't done much thinking about this, but it could go something like this.

    (A)---Guys who are verified can create and post RJ mails to other members, can do searches on age or on the basis of any category they choose, can post to Forums...in other words, they have full privileges...very similar to those found on other web forums;

    (B)---Guys who are unverified (Note: I am not wedded to this, but I was just trying to reward the guys who have taken the time to get verified, which the RJ webmasters clearly prefer. It could be that all these folks, some of whom are my RJ buddies, can be enfolded into the above category) but who at least have pictures and full profiles, can create and post RJ mails to other members,can post to Forums but can't do searches on the basis of age, or any other criterion ;

    (C)---Guys who are unverified, have no pictures, BUT have a full profiles can browse the site, and can post to Forums. However, they can't post RJ mails, can't do searches. If they want to ogle, they can just ogle via looking at pictures and clicking on profiles at random;

    (D)---Guys who are unverified, have no pictures, and no full profiles can browse the site, but can't post to Forums, can't post RJ mails, can't do searches. If they want to ogle, they can just ogle via looking at pictures and clicking on profiles at random.

    I know that this is bound to generate strong opinions. We've heard it all. Profiles can be all lies, the verification pictures can be faked. But those things take a lot of time and effort to fake.

    Clearly, the lurkers are bound to cry "free speech" and "exclusion" issues. But, it seems to me, that one way to increase the signal-to-noise ratio in the Forums and on RJ in general is to reward the members of Rj who treat the site seriously. Sure, we are all gay, and are looking for connections at some level (whether a friend, a workout buddy, a hookup or more).

    Let's pretend that the Rj Website Managers have no day jobs, and can spend time just overseeing RJ. So, this is partially tongue in cheek....jeffinsf. icon_razz.gif ....I don't know that this could be done, even if you wanted it to be done. RJ is such an incredible site...and I was thinking about how to make it better, perhaps. Maybe it wouldn't make it better.

    But it seems to me that many disparate Forum topic threads have something in common. Many seem to complain about who responds to their profiles, why others are not responding to their profiles, how they deal with multiple mails, who's hot and who's not...etc. etc....blah, blah, blah.

    The common thread I see is that some people are using this as a dating site, or as a hookup site, and others, while not foreclosing that, are using it as a site for fit guys to congregate and share ideas. Some guys thrown off of RJ in the last six months or so include guys who were clearly lurkers, or stalkers, or guys clearly here just to ogle pictures.

    Fine....but the main purpose of this site is not to find a hookup. After all, who cares about age, or definition, or height if you are on RJ to learn about fitness. icon_twisted.gif

    I am not advocating censorship. But, at least some filtering mechanism. Most of the guys who have been thrown off are in the last category above. They are a waste of bandwidth.

    Prof, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
    What use would the forums be if noone had anything to bitch about?
    I for one wouldn't want to belong to a perfect site. That would be boring.

    Fair enough. icon_razz.gif

    However, several of the Forum threads got way out of hand, not only in terms of bandwidth, but also in terms of the time and effort the RJ webmasters had to take to get things back in line.

    But, fair enough.

    Well this site can be used as a dating/hook-up site. It gives people that option.
    Fitness is attractive and how people choose to use it is clearly their business. People are, however, regulated in how far things can go.

    As long as YOU the individual know what you are here to use it for then that's all you should have to worry about.

    Guilty GearProf, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

    I'm gonna add my own saying too.

    Know yourself and your wants first before that of others. At least you'll be right in one area.

    It's not really a matter of knowing what you want. I could know that I want to go on the forums and post nothing but crude sexual things and harassing members through e-mail or IM, or whatever and that doesn't make it right.

    What he is proposing is somewhat reasonable, but I don't really know. I'd like to hear what others think too.

    Me too. I realize my post implies something exclusionary, but I really meant it to be something that stimulates discussion.

    it doesn't imply it... it IS exclusionary. LOL. apparently from what i've learned on another topic about verification, many active RJers are not verified, so this wouldnt work.

    I'm not verified because....oh, gee, because I don't care if you believe me or not. Anyway, who would make up that they're 51?

    I have noticed the forums seem a bit...livelier...than usual as of late, but I don't think we need to have anything radically changed around here. Goodness, some of the 'adjournments' are radical change enough.

    And I always have believed that jprichva was really just a hyperintelligent beagle named Ethel, out to conquer the world one gay site at a time.

    I'm going with Guilty on this one. Although I understand what fastprof is saying, in my opinion, it's nice that the site is geared towards working out but the reality of it all is that it includes area related to news and other events not related to fitness, was well as dating/relationships, sex and other adult discussions. Additionally, personal information such as height, eye color and safe sex? are not a part of any fitness plan I know of but the building of a portfolio about the other people on the site. It is a gay community with emphasis on fitness and albeit sometimes contentious, I think that it is that controversy that provides users with opportunities to express themselves. I think when you have shirtless guys and those in briefs who are in great shape and often very attractive you'll always have lurkers. I say keep up the current process, encourage verification and be mature enough to express your opinions without being offensive (on one hand) or offended (on the other). If you're offended by something, then move on to something else. Or as my son would say:

    Cry me a river, build me a bridge and get over it!

    Thanks fastprof for the effort and bringing up the subject, always nice to add a comment.

    Well, thanks for the thoughtful comment.

    However, making the Forums accessible to only those with full profiles with pictures or something like that will hardly damp down the bitching and controversies. We are all gay, aren't we? icon_twisted.gif It will only ensure that the people that post there are somewhat serious about the use of RJ.
