quitting smoking--hardest thing i've ever done

    this is kind of a rant... i started smoking when i was 17 and i've "quit" more times than i can remember. i'm not what you would call an overachiever, so quitting is probably the hardest thing i've ever tried, and i keep trying, i've never given up on wanting to be free of them. i've tried smoking till i got sick, hiding cravings with exercise, or caffeine, meditating, telling myself i don't need them. i've even called the florida quit line... the worst part is i enjoy it! watching the smoke, holding something/doing something in social situations, feeling the smoke in my lungs, etc., but i know all along it's bad for me. i grew up w/ D.A.R.E.--an anti-drug program for elementary schools; i know all about the consequences, i FEEL the consequences, but the CRAVINGS!!!!!!! i've done a lot of stupid shit in my life and i don't regret anything but smoking cigarettes... it's a complicated problem with a simple answer: self control! it's the only thing that's still holding me back from getting in shape. for a month before new years i wasn't smoking, then i went out on new years and smoke a whole pack and i've been smoking since. i just gave the last of my cigarettes to a friend so i couldn't fish them out of the trash (which i've done when i've been really stressed--fucking crazy) or dry them in the oven or roll a new cigarette (which i haven't done... yet... hahaha...)

    i can quit for good, i just need some inspiration... i'd love some stories from ex-smokers or advice or anything, really

    Ive quite thrice, once for a whole year, usually for several months... but I ineveitable started back up when stress levels got high

    The older you get, the harder it gets to quit.

    I started sneaking smokes when I was a teenager. During my adult years, I tried almost everything imaginable to stop and nothing seemed to work.

    On Sept 12, 2002, I was in a propane explosion and fire. I was airlifted to a burn unit and in ICU for awhile. The explosion and smoking were not related... I'm not that stupid! LOL

    Anyway, when I was in the hospital, the doctors told me that they didn't understand how I survived the "concussion" (sp?) of the blast.. or the force of the blast. But... what they thought was also remarkable is that many times, a smoker that gets the type of lung damage I had, won't survive because the bottoms of the lungs literally drop out...

    When I left the hospital, I could still smell burnt flesh in my nasal cavity. I could not inhale enough and didn't have enough strength to be able to blow my nose. They told me that if I went back to smoking, I would never recover and would most likely not live long. How much was truth and how much was scare tactic? I'll never know. I also know I wasn't willing to risk it.

    Besides that, the other two things that helped me to keep from lighting up again... 1. I had crossed one hurdle of "detox" while in the hospital. 2. I was going to my mother's to finish recuperating. She is a non-smoker and would not allow it in her house. I was so tired and weak that I literally laid around and slept for most of the first week.

    By the time I got back home, I was over the worst of the addiction. About one month later, I broke down and bummed a cigarette. One puff and it tasted like I had licked a dirty ashtray. YUCK! I put it out and never picked up another one.

    I hope you don't have to experience anything this drastic to quit smoking. But... Someday... your life may depend on you not being a smoker.

    Today, I'm thankful for being able to finally kick the addiction... just not the experience I had to go through to get there.

    I will say this. Even after quitting... and now... 8-1/2 years later, I still miss the taste of a cigarette with a beer, after sex, after a meal. You may never get over wanting another smoke, but you can get past the control the addiction has over you.

    Good luck.... No matter how many times you have to try, never give up trying to quit.

    Yes it's very good. I mean you still have to do the leg work but it helps you keep a good attitude.

    From what youve said, its obvious you arent really ready to give up smoking!
    and until then, i dont think youll succeed in doing it unless you really want too so dont worry about it! aha

    I started smoking at 14 and i quit last February (5 years smoking 10 a day).
    What really made me stop smoking was noticing my teeth being stained, having tooth ache, and bad skin!
    When i knew that i was tired of it all, i just went to the doctor and got my perscription of champix (may be different where you live).

    Take the tablets twice a day for 12 weeks. You should stop smoking/having cravings by day 10 (i stopped at day 9). Keep yourself occupied and focused on something else! for me it was the gym! i was so focused on gaining size that i knew if i smoked (although i had no craving, the "i havent had a cigarette in a while..maybe i hsould try one to see if i still like it" curiousity was still there) it would be longer and harder! and so i had no real reason too!

    the first few weeks i wouldnt put myself in situation where smoking was obviously around, or places where i would smoke such as when visiting my grandparents, or in a coffee shop!

    Since quiting in febuary, i smoked on and off for a week in september (i had jsut finished my summer job and so i was letting loose for a while aha! no more than 10 though) and i smoked 10 when i was on vacation in prague in november!

    now im back on my gym routine! smoking has no interest with me! went out for new years eve and some friends were teasing me with smoke in my face and it had no effect! actually i was quite disgusted by the smell ahha!

    anyway mate, really, you need to want to quit completely in order to succeed at it! and when you are, just stay focused and occupied!
