I got an Apple e-mail about this today, along with a related Snow Leopard OS upgrade notice for 10.6.6, which I've now downloaded. I haven't explored the Mac app store yet, which the upgrade puts under the Apple drop-down in the top menu bar.

UPDATE: I did a little browsing, and it's just not small independent developer apps like you have on the iPhone, but full productivity applications from major companies, some costing quite a bit, just like you'd find in an Apple store.

Interesting thing, as you scan them, it tells you if you already have the current version installed on your Mac, like Pages, or GarageBand, iPhoto, Aperture, etc. It already knows! Apple is so brilliant!

Now I don't have to run down to the Apple store (less than 4 miles away from us anyway, that sometimes I bicycle) to buy new software. And the selection appears far larger than what they can stock on the local store shelves. Life just got simpler. Thanks, Apple! icon_biggrin.gif

Well, this is interesting. I can't find Microsoft Word for Mac anywhere. I know it used to be available, and I was thinking of getting it, because I often write things that Word users will open, and they lose some of the formatting from Apple's Pages, despite the built-in translator.

And Pages has been rather dumbed-down, from the previous AppleWorks-Claris-AppleWorks iterations. So there are times when I want the more powerful features of Word.

    I'll have to keep looking...

OK, I phoned Apple (got through in under 1 minute, their phone support is fantastic), and they confirmed that MS Word is not being offered in the new Mac app store. I was told it still can be found in the "regular" online store, and off the shelf in Apple stores.

I was kinda surprised there are apparently 2 stores. Like, if these are Mac downloads, why aren't they all together? Apple is often enigmatic, if not downright confusing. A little consistency would be nice. icon_confused.gif

Might be licensing issues imposed by MS on its product?

    Just a guess.

Apple and consistency never seems to happen. I get annoyed at the fact that they have safari on three of their platform: iPhone, iPad and Mac and they are all tweaked slightly different with no reason as to why they all function differently. Don't get me started on iTunes for Mac vs iPod on iPhone and iPod on iPad!!!! icon_smile.gif

The Mac App store is another enigma. unfortunately (or fortunately?) it's Mac specific so there is no need for a Windows version. Yet some of the apps in the Mac App Store are pretty much Mac specific version of the same stuff you buy through iTunes on whichever platform you use.

I've tried a couple of app downloads and so far can't complain. I like how apps can be bought once and used on any Mac provided you use the same account. You can also delete an app and re-install it later.

I wish the Mac App store allowed you to use all of your iPad/iPhone/iPod apps on your computer. Although I enjoy using them on my iPad and iPhone, there are times when I wish I could use them on an even bigger screen.

I think it's great. I bought and downloaded Aperture two days ago. Quick as a snap.

The App store is also on the Dock now, second icon from the left.
