So i guess I'm like the only person in the whole world who hasn't seen Black Swan. None of my friends will shut up about it so I have committed to seeing it at some point. I think Im gonna go the the 42nd street AMC in NYC. Everyone I know saw it already and I don't want to go by myself. icon_neutral.gif

Looks fierce. My friend and I almost saw it last weekend but I kinda guessed that it was like Showgirls except for ballerinas and we decided not to see it. But still the poster itself is intriguing.

I saw it with my partner and our best friend and we loved it. Go early though and buy your tickets online. It was sold out the first few times we tried to go, and we tried to go to a 7:20 show but it was sold out so went to an 8:20 show. Try the Regal in Union Square - it was a huge screen and you don't have to deal with the tourists in Times Square (or bedbugs in the 42nd Street theater).

To be honest I haven't seen it either, it isn't being released here, but Google anything about it and you'll see that comparing it to Showgirls sounds criminal.

Bwa-ha-ha. You beat me to that punch. Might as well compare it to Golden Girls, too.

It was an overly simplistic view, yes. Of course it's not the same as Showgirls. The similarities I was thinking (of course without seeing the movie) was a young lady who knows her stuff and the current head ballerina feels her place is threatened, especially when young lady catches the fancy of head ballerina's man. As a result she plots to get rid of young lady. But young lady beats head dancer at her game and becomes new head dancer.

But I know I'm way off. I definitely wanna see it now. icon_biggrin.gif

These guys are right; Showgirls and Black Swan have nothing in common.

The studio may be trying to give that impression because audiences love to see women fighting each other, but it's not at all what the movie is about. I'm still thinking about it and it's been several weeks.

OMG, go and see that movie! Seriously, it is NOTHING like "Showgirls"...not even in the slightest!

It's beautiful, moving, disturbing, freaky, scary, thought provoking, and ultimately it's brilliant!!! And I have to say, as great as Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis were, it's Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder that, in my opinion, gave the performances that are hardest to forget!

Aronofsky has done for ballet and dance what he did for wrestling with "The Wrestler." In both cases, once you've seen his respective films, I don't think you'll look at those professions the same way ever again!

I'm probably going to go see it again on Tuesday!

I was talking to a perspective date and he hadn't seen it either. We're hoping to see it together. We just have to schedule a time to do so.

To dekiruman....hope you were able to find someone to see it with.

I have it on DVD if you want a copy? I watched it with my parents on Christmas eve. NOT the movie to watch with your parents. My mother was shocked to say the least. That, and she had no idea what was happening most of the time.

Agreed. (except for my mother, she thought it was going to be nice ballerina competition movie)

If your friends thought it was horrible, it was probably too intelligent for them.

She's already clutching that Oscar. The only other actress who has a chance at Best Actress is Annette Benning. But as one critic mentioned, Annette was great, but that part could have been played equally by any other actress with her merits. Natalie's part was tailored for her, only she could have played it. She looked the part, acted the crap out of it and succeeded.

Are you serious? This is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year -- a virtual shoe-in to get a truck load of Oscar nominations. Natalie Portman was briliiant. I think "Black Swan" qualifies as one of the absolute "Must See" movies of the year. Anyone who would put this movie in the same categories as "Showgirls" hasn't seen the movie, and will feel silly having done so after they do see it.

I loved it too Todd... but it's not going to make them all happy. I think it's film either you see it for the ART that it was or not.
The friend I went with thought it was OK.
Our tastes are way different. It's kinda a love,,, so so or hate film.
I Loved it! But then,, I got it.. The whole, "I just wanted to FEEL it.." I totally understood!

I want to sit in the theater between Todd and Tony and let them both put their hands in my Popcorn bag!

It was a good movie and I recommend watching it. However, If you think its embarrassing to watch movies alone then save your embarrassment for another movie. I thought the movie used too many cheap "Saw" type of pain and torture scenes to get a reaction out of the viewer, (i.e. pulling of skin off her hand, cutting her nails with scissors instead of a nail clipper). You can hear the audience cling onto something when these things happens. I thought it was cheap tactic. The only scene that really made an impact on me was when they cut to her dancing as the black swam. Portman's performance was great tho, she made me want to down a bottle of xanax.
