Or the 25% will invoke federal discrimination laws and insist on being drafted, if only for a desk job. icon_twisted.gif

o boy, already getting visions of a mass army ready to overthrow the whole world and turn thee globe into a fascist police state, military bases of said army at every turn you go to in this entire world... OR constantly send troops out for economic gain while exending human lives... to the purpose of an Orwellian perpetual war that keeps the money coming in

O wait.. THATS ALREADY HAPPENING!!! ALL OF IT!!!

Well no wonder the world is ending :-S

It's a bad idea for political reasons, but more importantly, most Americans would not tolerate having orders barked at them 24/7. Moreover, most Americans would rather work for multi-national corporations before they'd work for the US govt. or serve in the military. Unfortunate, but it's reality.

I have been very much FOR this for years! Bring it back and put some of these street corner punks to work rebuilding OUR nation!!
Teach them a trade, respect for authority and build some self confidence & purpose in life!!
Also, make it mandatory for women as well, like they do in Israel and a few other countries.
Boot camp alone would accomplish a lot!! I remember mine...it was hard as hell, but I tell you, I learned to respect my commanding officers and I learned a lot about my physical and personal limitations!!
    Yes.... 1,000 times YES !!!

STUPID comments!! You obviously don't know a thing about the military!!
Obviously, you've never been in the military...and I'm pretty sure you were not around when this country DID have laws for mandatory service.
First of all... AFTER boot camp, it's just a job, like any other. AND, considering the number of men AND women who are out of work right now, don't have a trade, and have no idea where they will be a year from now....
what better way to have free housing, free food, free medical...and GET paid for doing a little work???

i don't think people who are not of drafting age should have a say in this, including the OP.

The good thing a about a volunteer Army/Navy/Air Force is that (almost) everyone is there because they want to be. Conscription should not be used as a social service or a reform school. It is used by most developed countries as an urgent wartime contingency and, IMHO, that is where it should remain.

I think it should stay the way it is. I don't believe any state should force it's citizens into any sort of work. The range of 'professions' within the military are limited and do not suite all sensibilities. The benefits of joining the army exist with or without a draft, the fact will remain that not all need to go to the army for those services (job security, training, med/dental)...

Not to mention it's easy to debate and discuss the benefits of something that would not affect you directly!

Where? In Canada? Youre fucking Canadian. I certainly hope you aren't presumptuiously making that suggestion for the US.

Oh and I think Canada should separate into:
    the Maritime provinces
    Quebec
    Ontario
    the Plains provinces
    BC
and all the arctic land should become part of Alaska

That will solve all your bullshit arguments between fed and provincial responsibilities.

No, thank you! I'm not a huge fan of brainwashing or programming. Having my mind broken so that I can mindlessly follow orders doesn't sound that fun. I've taken far too many sociology and philosophy classes to ever mindlessly obey.

However, I've talked to other people who've served, and it's crazy the amount of money they get for serving (but deserved). College tuition is the biggest one that comes to my mind. Whoo boy, I would love to not have student loans >.<

Btw: Friendsrbetter ... ye gods, man! You've truly been programmed, haven't you?

I tend to think that it is working the way it is and that our military should remain an all-volunteer military. I don't think we want people in the military who are forced to be there. We want people who truly want to be there.
